Nvidia GTX480 and DX11

Post by DaddyHoggy »

Well for the first time in quite a while - I'm genuinely impressed.

Now, how the hell do I persuade my bosses to let me buy one, "to stay current and up to date" only works a few times, before they just flatly say "no"...

Have you tried the "essential to run simulations of futuristic technology so advanced it defies physics as we currently know it" line?

Yeh, that's how I got a loan of the Quadro Plex 2200 direct from Nvidia...

Don't forget the massive direct-compute power in these cards, and how that additional power will "Enhance your productivity and workplace efficiency"...
As well as "Allowing additional work-place time to enhance personal and project networking"...
Just find your favorite issue of buzz-word bingo and put as many of the contents in there as possible. If any paragraph would fail to give a player a bingo call, it's not got enough buzz-words :p

Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Disappointing. I was hoping Nvidia would put something out that would really up the competition either in price or performance, but this does neither really. Still, maybe AMD will be a little more competitive on pricing as a result, but as they don't have to be at present there is little reason for them to do so.

Hopefully the next iteration of Nvidia card in this series will make the market more exciting.

Remember that the yields on the chips these are made from currently make my hoover jealous with their level of suckage. The chips are currently only shipping with 3/4 of their capabilities enabled. When it settles down, you will get some coming out with all the shaders enabled.
These cards are still managing to be the most powerful single gpu cards out there tho.

The 480GTX doesn't look to be delivering results above the 5870 on a consistent basis yet, so it is hardly accurate to say that it is the most powerful single GPU card out there. Although once the drivers and what-not mature, this will probably change.

At present, unless the 480GTX shipped with a cheaper price tag than the 5870, I can't see a compelling reason to buy one.

Please don't mention AMD/ATI drivers!
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Ah yes the drivers. Currently I'm not having any driver issues with my ATI card, but it is a key concern. If the 5870 won't run Oolite properly, it is neither use nor ornament.

Still I'm not going to pay or the same more for a card that does less raw performance wise, irrespective of who makes it.
