Annoying icq message in my status bar.

Post by Cody »

What is ‘connecting to status.icq.com…’ please?
I keep getting this message in the status bar of my browser when browsing certain pages on the Oolite boards.
I select a page, the page loads properly and fully, but the progress bar never completes… just keeps trying to load, even though there is nothing coming down the line. It’s irritating. Is it something to do with a member with an icq address?
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

It might be my fault  , I have an ICQ button listed under my posts. I think the ICQ flower icon should change colour when I am online and offline.

Interesting, I'm getting some strange status bar activity too now you're online.

It might be your fault, JazHaz, or not. It's bloody annoying, though. Please sort it out.

Thanks JazHaz, that has stopped it, but it can’t be just you… others have an icq address as well, don’t they!

Don't know who though. Thought the Memberlist screen might list it, but not.

No, the memberlist doesn't list it, so you would have to check all members independently.

Usually the presence of an ICQ address for a new member hints at a spam bot. For some reason they usually give a (fake) email and a (fake) ICQ address, but practically never a MSN, Yahoo, or AIM address. Don't know why.

It happens anytime there's a post on a page by a member with an ICQ link in their profile.. basically, the ICQ status servers take forever to respond to the query from your browser.. hence the hung progress bar. I usually just hit the 'Stop' button at the top of my browser when it happens.. but yes, it's very annoying after a while.
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Weird!

Have used ICQ for more than 10 years, originally used it on my Atari Falcon030 computer back in the day, when ICQ was the only instant messenger available on that platform.

I now use Digsby for all my instant messaging needs. It supports MSN, Yahoo, AIM/ICQ, Facebook and Twitter. Though I don't use it for the last two, prefer to use Tweetdeck for those two.

Recommend both Digsby and Tweetdeck!
