directions to hackers outpost......

Post by bigmike20vt »

So i was in an anarchy system completing my scourge of the black baron mission, and i happened upon a stolen offender viper.

on giving him a good lesson in general space faring etiquette he sent me a message asking to spare him and he said there is a hackers outpost in the system, follow the H on your scanner.

i let him live to check out this new intel, however i could see no such marker on my scanner.

am using the newest "stable" release (173.4 i think it is)

am i missing the obvious?

cheers

You need to have an Advanced Space Compass and then hit '\' to cycle through the objects in it. That's where it will be.

For some keyboard layouts (I guess at least Scandinavian ones, mine's Finnish) the key that Oolite inerprets as '\' is the *' -key (Enter's and Right Shift's common neighbour).
...and keep it under lightspeed!

edit : not quite true what I wrote here (not for Macs), see Ahruman's post below" /edit

For any keyboard layout other than US QWERTY layout, just look up where the Oolite-documented key is on them US keyboards, and use the same button (same in position), no matter what it says.
(At least, that is how it works for me, in windows with a German language oriented qwertz keyboard layout)

US QWERTY keyboard layout : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Qwerty.svg

I saved that picture as .jpg into my Oolite folder, so I can always look it up without the need to start a browser or something.

Woa - wait. That one works too.

So I have two buttons that make the ASC cycle - the one you describe, AND the button right to the left shift button (between Shift and zoom scanner).

Strange.

It hasn't remained there for me.. every time I go back to an Anarchy system, I have to find another Hacker Viper and harass him into revealing the location.
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

This depends on operating system. On Macs, the actual character value is used; on other platforms, key position is used.

No. You'll have to go through the teasing process again.

Note: If you specifically want a Hacker Outpost, you have to go for an Anarchy with a TL (techlevel) between 7 and 9. Anarchies with lower techlevels will have different goodies. For more explanation consult the ReadMe or the Wiki.

Yep, in windows Oolite recognises both the UK & the US '\' keys. For all other characters, please refer to the US keyboard layout.

There was a discussion about this very subject somewhere on the forum a while ago...

Pity my old Dell CPx doesn't have enough oomph to play oolite (650MHz PIII, 8MB gfx) - it's got a US keyboard - but because I semi-touch-type I've got it set to UK keyboard layout because my fingers (mostly) know where they expect to find the @ symbol and the " symbol amongst others!

I’ve got a US keyboard set to Swedish on my MacBook. Remembering the mapping isn’t a problem, but the physical differences are; I keep getting ' and return mixed up, and < is in the wrong place.

How boring it is to have a German keyboard set to German... :P

I remember once on a big NATO trial in France we had to set up loads of Admin passwords to segregate the data for the different nations (participants and observers mainly - some politics there) on the NATO network. Being good sysadmins we setup memorable but strong alphanumeric passwords with a smattering of special characters thrown in for good measure.

Shortly afterwards - chaos ensued as nobody could logon - much head scratching - cursing - more head scratching - lots of cursing before I noticed we'd entered the passwords on French keyboards - where you have to do SHIFT to get the numbers not the special characters - red faces all round...

bigmike: I don't suppose you managed to whack a salvage missile onto one of those Black Baron Agent ships did you? I snagged two, but they were both destroyed by pirates before the dredger sallowed them, and I have since completed that mission.

I suppose I could open a file within the OXP to find out how much I would have got for one, but I'm too busy right now playing with DeepSpace's new texture pack installed :D
