I killed this guy, after a LOT of trouble, (he was tough, and had tough friends), and when I get back to the station, I'm told he "had an accident"??? Yeah, it was at the business end of my mil laser... so why did I get 235 creds instead of the 5 or 6 thousand???

The most likely reason is that the final shot (the one that killed him) was fired by someone else. Or he crashed into something right before you got him.
It is only the event that finally kills him which counts. Not who brought his energy down to 1, but who took this final 1. And that may not have been you.
