Ships database

Post by kcallis »

What would be real cool would be a database of ships accessible, either at the Station or on-line (inside of the cockpit), the would provide for all ship types along with the full specs. For some reason, if I remember correctly, that was a feature of the original Elite... Or I may have confused that with another game.

I remember Amiga Elite had a catalog on the second disk which contained ship information. Was available through one of the F-keys.

Bit difficult to do with all the available ships in OXPs. Especially as they aren't all on the wiki....

Yeh, it wouldn't be a simple matter of someone knocking up an OXP to do it. They could be read from shipdata.plist, but that would probably require a short description to be added as one of the shipdata fields. Plus there would need to be a new page designed, and allocation of the new function key to bring it up. Maybe one of the devs could do it, if they wanted to.

This post deals with some of the same issues, though looking at it from a slightly different angle.

AFAIK no one has come up with anything better than rip-the-data-from-plist-and-display.

No matter how it's done, we're looking at post-MNSR.

You'd also need a way for OXP author's to hide stats of ships they don't want discovered in this method.
