the size of the poles etc is easy to configure. And the presence (and colour) of poles will depend on what the ocean is made of :)

http://www.flickr.com/photos/24657513@N04/2366658821/ I think I'm getting there with more realistic polar and equatorial regions. At the moment the palette is shifted by looking at altitude and distance from the equatorial. depending on the value the equatorial region goes gradually more greeny yell...

Your approach sounds more complex than mine. I was just thinking of the easiest way to get it started and sidestepping a load of potential problems, for example: - There's also the issue of someone turning up in an uber ship and being far too powerful - The other players not having the OXP for that ...

Are you thinking it'll be a case of: start oolite select multiplayer exit witchspace to find it full of other people I guess you do it out of system so there's no station and give everyone a cobra 3, a beam laser and no fuel? cool :) edit - that's not how the list command works on this board then......

@pagroove: We need to wait for me to get the procedural generator up to scratch first! :) I had a bit of a go at getting it to generate distinct ice caps rather than just making the poles higher altitude. It looks promising but there's still work to do. Similarly I'm going to get the equatorial band...

Ah right, makes perfect sense when you explain it like that. I'd imagined it looked for asteroids that were a bit warm as that would imply they were inhabited.

If it's just looking in an internal map of known hermits then it works exactly as expected.

Cheers :)

aha! I didn't realise they were in the system description, thanks both :) I must admit that I almost never use that screen as the 'hold down I' trick gives you all most of the information you'll need. Maybe the status (F5) screen could add a line telling you the name and distance to the nearest SecC...

hold space
Do you mean you held down space while restarting Oolite to clear the OXP cache? If so then it's 'shift' not space you have to hold down.

The S on the compass works fine when in system. I meant on the galactic chart - I'd like to be able to find a seccom station without first having to go to the wiki, look up the galaxy, look for secom stations, look for where i am, work out which is closest etc. If the gal chart highlight the seccom ...

maybe there should be a distinction between a new and second hand ship. new ones would be expensive and less common in the ship yards. s/h would be quite a lot cheaper, perhaps a little slower, a little rusty, slightly less enrgy etc - just like the rusty ships OXP. when selling a new one you'd take...

One of the next steps will be to have more colours. I'm thinking something like low levels will be a (small) range of blues, then I'll have a greeny palette for vegetation, then a rocky palette and finally the snowy palette. If that looks a bit artificial I may try making latitude part of the colori...

And adding a polar regionhttp://www.flickr.com/photos/24657513@N04/2346479400/

bit of a fudge as I'm just making it higher which shifts it to the white end of the palette. But it seems to work :)

I've got cubic interpolation working now - much nicer! I've also knocked p the resolution to 512x256 and refactored the code so it's easy to change (to 1024x512) in the future. This set of picture show the same landscape with a rising sea level. For comparison there's a linear interpolation image as...
