All games I ever played were a hell of a lot more fun when dying was a real threat. You had to be cautious, and getting in over your head and coming out of it alive was a real achievement. Wings for example. How many times did you hastily reboot before it could save your death to disk? How many tim...

Maybe, they're trying to clock up kills but it seems a dangerous tactic given that the police suck at combat. The navy are good at finishing off thargoids in witchspace but the local boys are a bunch of numpties as far as I can tell. They do specialize in the taking out of smugglers and pirates abo...

It definately adds an element of realism that is distinctly lacking in the genre as a whole. And there is a certain charm to being the grizzled old spacer pulling that Riedquat run in a laser-burnt old rustbucket. It would be really neat if you could specifically buy an old beat-up ship at a cut rat...

later, when Elite was launched with that big C64 Firebird campaign, I lived in Holland and there were a few of us (Zzap!64 subscribing game nerds) who were fast drawn to it and grew slightly obsessed, just in my small school. I'd think Elite sold well widely over Europe. Less so accross the Big pon...

Thing is not everyone wants every OXP (although I play with them all installed). Thats what makes the game so good. It is almost infinatley expandable and players customise it as they wish. Be a shame to lose that variety in game play. That is why Oolite was designed to easily integrate oxps. The c...

Re: Something For The Beer Crowd
Okay, I've discovered a great way to enjoy Oolite. First, you must get yourself 3D accel enabled (Linux,Mac,PC) and tv out gfx card (Nvidia,ATi). Then, output to large TV screen (me? 32" crt, you hdtv??). Now find a good spacey, ambient internet station ( I use 'streamtuner' app and browse 'sh...

Next question then, any chance the procedure could be made to look a bit more 'showy' i.e. smooth, sweeping curves (not stopping and lining up like us mere mortals)? Spline-curve navigation? It's in the working-on-it stage (it's kind of necessary to the growing racing code). Don't forget the approp...

First off, Hi! I'm Ironlion45. Long-time Elite player- Like most here. Also I occasionally post on EBBS. Once In a blue moon, I go to AFE. I have been Elite in at least 5 different incarnations of the game (PC, ARC, TNK, FE2, FFE; and I am working on Oolite). Introductions aside... For me, having pl...
