The bug is fixed in r4437. Apparently the mechanism for reacting to the detection of more joysticks than allowed was not completely fail-safe (btw, on Windows the number of maximum sticks recognized by the game is 2). I had some trouble with previous versions, luckily 1.75 seems to be pretty stable on my computer.
