Re: Why was the difficulty of pirates set so high?
I wonder if difficulty might not be tied to the Galaxy you find yourself in? Considered here . Assuming one installs suitable oxps to make oolite more forgiving from the outset, I think this is currently my favoured way of managing difficulty within the game (although it's likely in need of an upda...

Re: Why was the difficulty of pirates set so high?
I don't think it solves the problem - or rather, the real problem behind this one, which is that the game gets easier as you progress. It should be the opposite. I wonder if difficulty might not be tied to the Galaxy you find yourself in? 8 galaxies currently, yes? 1 = easiest diff to 8 = insane. I...

Re: Why was the difficulty of pirates set so high?
The easiest way to do this would be to increase the difference between "safe" and "dangerous" systems. Pirates in Corporate States should be very rare, and pirate packs there should be incredibly rare. For Democracies, replace "very rare" with "rare". Most tr...

Re: joystick recommendation
When I do play oolite, it's on linux. I used to use a Logitech Wingman but switched to a Logitech dual action gamepad some time ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1zeBaASgXE
Setting it up in linux is fairly easy and I like having every control I need under a finger or a thumb.
Cheers.

Re: Why was the difficulty of pirates set so high?
First, in Oolite you never get attacked by anything less than five pirates at a time, and 7-8 is more likely. Due to the improved and shaded graphics, ships are EXTREMELY hard to see at a distance, so much so that half the time I literally can't see a damn thing other than the lasers coming at me. ...

Commander name not displaying properly.
Greets to all, Been away from the game for awhile and recently installed 1.82. Very nice update I would say. However, I've noticed that after saving my Commander under a different name, the default "Jameson" still displays after loading my new commander. Is this a known problem or am I mis...

Re: Intel i5-2430m - integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics.
Whenever I see a discussion about OpenGL on an Intel HD integrated chip set, I always recommend installing this OpenGL viewer program: http://www.realtech-vr.com/glview/ Excellent program, free, and will show you in detail just how much of OpenGL your chip set will support, core features, extensions...

Re: How to get more FPS
More FPS? Maximum FPS is generally tied to the display frame refresh rate. At a 60hz refresh, you'll top out at 60fps. The screen can't update the graphics display information faster. The engine code may be capable of updating game display data at 100fps but the physical display can't do it ... the ...

Re: Star Trek... is it really forty-five years old?
Yeah, 45 ... hmm ... I'll give away my age but I watched the original series as a kid when it aired. Between StarTrek TOS and the writings of men (and women!) like Arthur C. Clarke, Robert Heinlein and Andre Norton, I would say they sparked in me a lifelong love of space and it's infinite possibilit...

Re: New distribution-neutral package format
Undoubtedly ... the example is simplified ...while bash has similarities to windows CMD ( or dos command.com), there's also a huge difference in what you can do with them.
Cheers.

Re: OT - configuring XWindows
I hope I'm not intruding too much here ... If I might suggest, I would recommend an Ubuntu distro these days. The install is usually trouble free, the device drivers work 99% of the time out of the box, it uses the newer up-to-date kernals, etc. Just download the .iso, burn to DVD and pop it in the ...

OK, DH, you got me, ... I have to ask. How is 'sudo' different from 'sudo bash'? Is 'sudo' a temporary condition for one command, whilest 'sudo bash' is a condition until informed otherwise? ... as in while ... and ... endwhile? Background: BASH is a shell, (Bourne Again SHell). Think of it as simi...

Wing Commander: Privateer now on Gog.com
http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/wing_commander_privateer Evidently, Gog has penned a deal with EA to re-release about 25 of their older games. WC:P is included in that deal! From their site: The biggest announcement in GOG.com's history is a fact! Electronic Arts grants access to its deep back catalo...

I occurs to me that not every station might not be able to accommodate every ship. Lower tech systems might have stations that reflect their current tech status ie; the standard docking arrangement. OTOH, high tech level system might have stations with larger docking facilities as a reflection of th...
