If anyone out there owns and iPhone and a Win 7 PC, could I ask a question?
My wife wants to download some photos from a friends iphone onto her PC. Is this do-able via bog-standard USB? I know nothing about iPhones but don't fancy trying to install iTunes and all that cobblers...
Cheers,
Drew.

Not directly - best bet is to email the photos from the phone, or use Dropbox. If the phone and laptop both connect via broadband wireless, this is a pretty quick and easy way to do it.

Well, I transfer photos all the time via the USB cable from my iPhone to my PC. Once it's connected, just navigate to it in Windows.
I suppose the only possible problem might be if it's someone else's iPhone - iTunes wouldn't like that but I'm sure Windows would be ok with it...

Pleasantly surprised to find that Win7 recognised the iPhone, downloaded a driver and then downloaded the photos without fuss. Thanks all!
