The Oolite chatroom

A reminder for all commanders… the Oolite chatroom (aka DS's Seedy Space Bar) on IRC, can be a good place to hang-out.

We’ve got in-flight chat going down from some commanders, we get some game problems solved, we have an excellent ‘Captains Table’ section, with exotic recipes from around the eight… and sometimes it's as quiet as deep space. More importantly, it’s also a really good contact point if the forum should ever go down.

IRC Chatroom #Oolite house rules, as supplied by Phantor Gorth, the bar manager of this fine establishment:

DS's is open to all (including children and larvae).

Basic Rules:

 1. Old Standard Galactic (English) only.
 2. Be nice.
 3. No clones (multiple active channel connections).
Additional Rules:
 1. No smoking. Please go outside.
 2. No trumbles. (Other than on the menu.)
 3. Insects may not defecate anywhere they want. They must use the toilets.
 4. Felines must not eat the customers.
 5. Male Horny Lizards must behave around females (of any species). (This is a family friendly establishment.)
 6. Rodents must not gnaw the furniture.
 7. No dealing Arzaquarian Megaweed without a cut to the management.
 8. Slaves must be kept on a leash and clothed at all times.
 9. Some drinks are lethal to some species. Customers imbibe at their own risk.
 10. Do not ask for credit as refusal often offends. Try the Black Monks.
 11. Bar brawls will be stopped by opening the airlock.
 12. Do not drink and pilot your spaceship. You may leave your keys behind the bar.

For those new to IRC here is a helpful guide to irc netiquette (ok it is for another channel but it will give you a good idea of reasonable irc behaviour).

Download MIRC or similar I guess

When I get time I'll have a go, it's been a while for me <most things have!>

If you don't feel like downloading stuff, there are clients that run straight from your browser without any fuss. I used Mibbit.com on another chatroom a while back, and it works pretty well.

Right. Because I've used Mibbit for IRC earlier, FF remembers this. So the easiest way in for me is to go to http://www.oolite.org/links and click on the Wiki link.

To do it manually: Go to chat.mibbit.com. By default, they use a different server, so you need to click on Server and change it to irc.oftc.net. Enter nick, set channel to #oolite, click go. That should be it.

If memory serves me right, the first time I used the link from http://www.oolite.org/links, FF remembered that I had previously used Mibbit, and asked me if I wanted to open the link there. So if my guess is right, you'll get a similar option once you've already been there. If not, there must be some manual setting somewhere. If it doesn't work out I can have a dig in my FF settings to see what crops up.

Yes, mIRC is of course another option you can go with. But if you don't like that one, try one of the other suggestions.

As mentioned on another thread, I have no extensive knowledge of the various IRC clients. The link I was given to the chatroom I was using a few years back was a Miibbit link. Since I try to avoid installing plugins whenever possible, I've just stuck to it on the few occasions I've ventured into other rooms.

If any of you use Opera the built-in chat client is quick and easy to use. just go to Menu, Mail and Chat accounts and set it up. It takes a few seconds, and once set up you can keep the chatroom open in a browser tab.
If you've never tried it, the Mail client is also excellent and has similar features.

KW... I was a complete Jameson at IRC until the new year hack. Like you, I use Firefox, so I went for ChatZilla as a client.
It works fine, and has given me no problems at all. Only thing is, it won't work in a browser tab... it opens its own window (which actually suits me).

Latest additions to the attractions at DS’s Seedy Space Bar include: ‘Frame the Mystic’s Pearls of Wisdom, Spooky’s Sci-Fi Clichés, Admiral’s Question Time, The Smivses – An Everyday Tale of Ordinary Spacefaring Folk… and if you’re lucky, Radio Sombrero, the only pan-galactic pirate radio station on the hyperwaves.

Oh… and Oolite gets discussed occasionly, and some problems do get sorted.

Good Evening
Dropped by the bar and it was so quiet that I could hear the cricket behind the bar.
Glad to see that there is something like this. Hope to come back when someone is there. Happy hunting!!
