Regarding email addresses

I'm not sure if this is related to the recent site hack but my hotmail seems to have been compromised recently. (The passwords were not the same so it's probably a coincidence.)
At any rate I've created a new email account but the board refuses to accept it. Is this because the new address is a gmail account?

Hi Loxley... sorry about your problems. G-mail should be okay... I use it myself.
It'll have to be one of the admins to help you, though.

Gmail addresses ending with digits are banned.

Ah good… I didn't know that. Recently, when trying to open a throwaway g-mail account, I noticed that they now seem to want a verification phone number.

Ah, that would be the problem.
Never mind, it won't hurt to have a secondary email address. Thanks for the help.

I think Ahruman meant that gmail accounts that end with numbers can't register on this site.
I guess gmail are making a token gesture towards them being a spam factory - but as they don't ring you up, not much difference between making up an address and making up a telephone number too.

Ah, but they do -kinda- ring you up. (confirmation SMS you have to re-enter)

So if you don't have a mobile phone, you can't have a Gmail account?
(if this is true I guess you could get a Skype account - under false name/details - and get the Skype account to receive the SMS)

Last time I checked, you couldn’t receive SMSes in Skype (unless the sender sent it through a bridge service, which I doubt Google would do accidentally). Besides, having a phone number for a Skype account costs money, so it’s not a simple throwaway thing.

Strange, I wasn't asked for a phone number when I set up the gmail account last night. No identity verification was required at all to be honest.

Did you enter a recovery e-mail address?

No I didn't (although it was an option). The only authentication was the usual enter the strange shaped letters deal.

Ah, I've got a Skype account that I use for business when I'm away abroad (I pointed out to work it was cheaper than claiming my calls back) so I hadn't thought about it, as I can send, and have received SMSs via my Skype account.

Curious... the other night it required phone verification... now it doesn't... I just opened one.

That is strange. Still,it's nice to know I haven't lost all my marbles just yet (I was beginning to doubt my memory for a minute there).
