I know this may have been asked like a zillion times but I can't seem to find anything by searching.

So, how come the F4 screen has never been used? Not just on Oolite but with other versions of Elite too.

I don’t know… maybe it’s being held-back for something momentous... but F4 was used in Elite+, and in the original, I think.

F1-4 select view screens while in flight, and in stations F1-3 are mapped to station-only screens; F5-8 are all mapped to screens which can be used in station or in flight, so I assume that there weren't any other station-only screens to put on F4 so they just left it out.

I just thought that maybe the F4 screen may had been used for the ship buying screen or passenger/cargo contracts screen.

I do remember in the original Elite that I had the F4 screen was not used in the game, except for the port view in flight.

Not to worry. Port/Starboard dyslexia is almost as common as the East/West variety. Sometimes they even combine, with predictably hilarious results.

Ummm, I don't think he was being rude. To me it looks more like he's laughing at himself for nitpicking.

That reminds me of an old joke: While the captain of the huge ship (maybe an old windjammer) was still alive, he had a peculiar habit. Every morning when he entered the bridge, he took an old, worn-out box from a special place, got a very old key out of his pocket, unlocked and opened the box, and took a long look into it. Then he closed and locked the box, and put it back into its special place. His officers had watched the old man for years, but nobody ever dared to ask him about this, and nobody dared to secretly open the box.

Now the captain is dead, and after they buried him, the first thing they do is to rush onto the bridge and find out his secret. They get the box and open it. Inside they find a piece of paper, with some notes scribbled on it, so old that it's almost disintegrating. They read in amazement: 'starbord = right; port = left'.

If I recall correctly, in the old ArcElite that I used to play, F4 accessed the equip screen whilst docked...

 I heard somebody ask once - if Starboard was right if they were facing the front or the back of the ship...

And at least the difference between port and starboard are easy to remember in the sense that larboard and starboard may not have been...
