Galaxy Guide - I'm Back!

Hi, all,

Sorry that it took that long, but now I'm back to continue on the Galaxy Guide.

I already started the guide for sector 2 with Famous Planets 2.5, Galactic Navy and the Traders Almanach.

I'm now searching for the svg-files of the ClymAngus' Vector Map, as I can't zoom into the PDF to distinguish the trade routes and regions. Alternatively, if someone has these pieces of information as a text file, I'd be grateful.

Are there other important OXPs that have impact on galaxy sector 2 and should be included in the guide?

Yours,
Christian Treczoks.

What are you using to view the PDF that prevents you zooming in?

Somehow, the Acrobat Reader did not like me. I tried again, and now I could zoom. Strange...
I now got the Trade Routes and Regions of Sector 2 and will start uploading the first version RSN.

Yours, Christian

If you're using Windows you could always try Foxit - it has a tiny footprint compared to Adobe AR, and seems to run much faster and behaves much better too.

So far I've rendered all the pages for Sector 2 for the first time, and started uploading them.
I've done the big list and the first half of the systems in Sector 2, and will do the remaining pages ASAP.
Time to go to bed...

Nice to know that at least someone missed me ;-)

Can I use small versions of the system .png's from your Famous Planets 2.5 for the Guide?

Are there any changes in system descriptions in Sector 1 from FP2.0 to FP2.5?

Today I added another 64 systems of Galaxy Sector 2 and made the routes and regions pages. Sixty-four systems to go, and the Galactic Navy, too (Although I've got a rendering issue with the navy maps, something that should be easily fixable).

Welcome back, treczoks! :D

It's probably not your fault, but I am confused over the nomenclature. You're talking about 'sectors', and I thought "Wow! It's awesome that somebody will make a guide as detailed as individual sectors of a galaxy." Then I followed your link and discovered that the map seems to be of Galaxy 2, not (as I thought) of sector II of Galaxy 1.

Up until now, when we were talking about the eight galaxies in Oolite, we used to refer to them as, well, errm, 'Galaxies'. Alternatively some have used 'charts'. Lave is located in Galaxy 1 (or chart 1). The infamous Oresrati is located in Galaxy 8 (or chart 8 ). I don't see the need to scrap these words at this point, and replace them with 'sectors'.

It's especially confusing, because there already exist entities which are named 'sectors'. Galactic Navy.oxp has introduced them to the game. Each galaxy (or chart) is according to this OXP divided into 16 sectors, each of them sporting a Naval Command Station in one central system. Whether I like this idea or not, it means that in the minds of many players a 'sector' equals roughly 1/16 of one galaxy (or chart), and there are a total of 8 * 16 = 128 sectors in the known Ooniverse. Therefore I don't think it's a wise decision to begin to call the whole map a 'sector', especially as there already exist two other, well established words for the same thing.

So perhaps you could give another thought to the wording? I would be very grateful (and so would be many other potentially confused players, I guess).

Back in ye olden days I asked about the proper, accepted nomenclature in this very forum. As 256 star systems within 256 ly can IMHO not really be called a proper "Galaxy", I followed the theory/nomenclature that the eight maps show eight inhabitable/populated/civilized/whatever sub-parts of a single galaxy. So I called them "Galaxy Sectors" from the very beginning.

I am aware of the existence of "Navy Command Sectors". Therefor, to avoid confusion, I (usually) call the maps/charts/etc "Galaxy Sectors", and not just "Sectors".

With all due respect, commander, I won't. I'm not going to edit and move about 500 wiki pages with all the set links while trying to maintain the links set by other people into the galaxy guide. Besides, this would turn the wiki in a "redirect hell", which I'd like to avoid. I've asked the forum, and I used the answer given by the forum, and I'll stick to it.

Galaxy Guide for Galaxy Sector 2 - First Installment Done!

OK, the first installment of the Galaxy Guide for Galaxy Sector 2 is done.

Next stop is Bug Hunting Lane, a long and winded road, full of potholes. I already found a certain class of "red links" that I will fix next, but I'm open to anything else anyone finds.

I'm especially interested in hints for OXPs and Fiction that somehow touch the Galaxy Sector 2.

Yours, Christian Treczoks

Hi treczoks... do you have the latest Vector Maps... there's a new 'sector' in G2 (which is used in Kaxgar).

The Ionics oxp affects the northwest corner of Galaxy 2 - I think that it alters tech levels, and it definitely changes planetary descriptions...

Yes, both of it.

Depends on what you call "latest". I downloaded the PDF on sunday, so it should be fairly new. Here is a List of the Routes and Regions I extracted from this map: Galaxy Sector 2 Routes and Regions.

I'll have a look at Kaxgar and see what I can do with it.
