Oh dear, last night I gave in to my desires and took out a loan from the BMs, I'll have a thrill of a ride for 16 weeks then fly into a star before they catch up with me.......................

Well, you *could* get a Caduceus Omega on the loan and lay waste to any gunship that comes near you. (Disclaimer: I have never fought a gunship, so I cannot vouch for the effectiveness of this tactic.)

No, you couldn't, which makes this useful-sounding piece of advice a no-go.

The Black Monks only loan you 20,000 credits. That's a couple of zeroes short of a Caddy's price tag.

You could hack the OXP so that an administrative error in your favour... (adds those extra 00s)

You could 'borrow' the zeroes from the interest rate :D

I once took out a loan so I could buy a larger ship, figuring I could earn enough credits to pay the debt in time.

As it became apparent that I wouldn't be able to pay up, I thought my shiny new ship could handle those pesky gunships.

Nope. :D

Hi uua90 and welcome to ‘the friendliest forum this side of Riedquat’™

The Black Monks deal a harsh lesson in borrowing credits, so I’ve heard.

Given that 20,000 credits isn't even enough for a military laser, taking out a loan from the monks in order to evade them better is not a terribly good idea.

IIRC the Military Laser costs 6000 Cr, so you need to pay only 5600 or 5000 Cr for it.

Gyaaah, confused military laser and shield enhancement prices.

Well, I must confess - I have now removed the BM OXP, and still have the loan in the bank - might just save as new commander and reinstall!

Or... You could sell your ship and buy a cheaper one and pay them off. Ok it will take you a while to get back to where you started but look at the lesson you have learned! And then when you can afford a Caduceus then you can go after them full of vengeance and smite their black hides!

The Monks have long memories and the infinite patience that comes with their faith. They're prepared to wait until you reinstall. They also reckon time differently than the rest of the Ooniverse, which can lead to interesting misunderstandings.

On a slightly different note: The net effect you get from installing BM, taking out a loan, then uninstalling BM can be achieved much cleaner and faster by opening your savegame in your favourite non-Notepad text editor and adding the credits.

I sold my Cobra III for a little Adder to pay the debt. I made a new commander when I realized I can't cut it as a bounty hunter, at least not in that thing.
