Coming to a solar system near you, sometime in 2012:
Massive gamma ray bubbles discovered milky-way
OMG, we're all gonna die!
I reckon there's a Hollywood disaster movie in the making there.

I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

It's my understanding that a gamma ray burst in the (Earth's) face is right up there with with a blackhole come a-waltzing through the solar system, in terms of "OMG, we're going to die" moments.
It fascinates me that we talk about the raw power of mother nature and some of the incredible forces we see right here on Earth... and then you step out into space...
Humans are fragile, Earth is fragile, everything in the universe is so damn fragile!

OMG! We're going to die
and we're fragile!
<wistful mode> It would be nice if a few of us biological entities manage to escape this gravity well before we implode...</wistful mode>
Hopefully not bang smack into some gamma rays, though!
