I have in mind a design for a liner, basically a series of 3 interlinked hemispheres, decreasing in size as they get nearer the front. The first sphere would contain the bridge and 1st class cabins, while the last would contain the engines and 3rd class cabins.

I'm happy to try creating the basic model in wings but making it look pretty and writing the scripts for it are way beyond me at the moment.

<Edit>

Here's a rough example of what I mean:

Modular ship design - nice idea... :)

Finally added it to the WIP section of the [wiki]OXP List[/wiki]. I couldn't figure out much more than that it adds very large ships so the description is a bit bland atm. Also, please double-check I got the author and contributors right.

There is a ship I found that I think you would like:
The Final Capital (rubbish name really)
model is in .obj and .blend with all neccessary textures

Sorry for the late reply. Do you have a screenshot?
I can load it in Wings this week but I have not so much time. :)

 8)

Is that ship in Oolite? Or have you made that up? The nebula doesn't quite feel like an Oolite Nebula.

Fantastic looking ship, irrespective of that!

I think that in Oolite it will look more like:

The provided textures are in bitmap. Anyhow, I am not sure who owns the model file and if it can be used free.
The package above also includes a studio3D file that can be directly imported by Wings3d.

Edit: replaced the picture with a better one.

the model is from turbosquid here
and has a standard royalty free licence, it can therefore be re-distributed in .dat form

Okay, so I converted it further to work in Oolite. Interestingly was the ship set up to fly along the x-axis. With what rotating, modifying and adding the light maps, the ship starts so look much better in Oolite. I updated the picture in my above message.

And trying to give it an aft plasma cannon, I noticed this is not working correct in oolite. The plasma bolts of an aft cannon were still flying forwards. Its fixed in trunk now.

The first release of the OXP is still imminent (ie whenever Smivs has time to finish packaging it up) so it may not be too late for this to be dropped into it, if it can be suitably prepared.

Indeed. I'm a bit tied up with Xeptatl's Sword as that's only a week away from release. I will look at the Liners immediately afterwards. If someone can package it up, I can include it. It does look rather nice.
