There's far more attractive things in the galaxy to get a fetish over, trust me on that... Like guns! Seen the new Trojan Arms KZ902? Now that's a pretty laser rifle. Excuse my drool.

'... a fetish for decontamination grease'
It does conjure an interesting image, though... good to see you back, Wyvern.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

It's good to be back.
I see you all have been busy, there's some new toys on the market. I can't wait to unwrap those gifts, and make the unworthy consider the eject handle. :)

Is that a Viper as your new avatar, Wyvern? That's what wyvern means, isn't it... in old French or something?

Yes, it's a Viper, the well known police ship.

So I'm not a cop, but a...errm..freelance enforcer. 8) Same difference if you happen to get an Offender tag - shot out of the sky :twisted: - just without the flashing blue strobes.
And no, I don't ride in a Viper.

Welcome back Wvyern! :D

Don't worry too much about the grease, it's what happens when your double-barrelled shotgun runs out of ammo you should be more concerned with! :lol:

A weapon Derik pried from some rogue's cold dead fingers, or found in a salvaged cargo container labled 'firearms'? :? When it run out of ammo, Derik would reach for his trusty Widowmaker and feed 'em hot plasma. :twisted:

<recorded exert from hatchling space readiness training, extra curricular class ATX7-c4: Boarding: Close range projectile combat.>

Hello Children; I'm Doctor Remmington Smith-Western. But my friends call me Dr BoomBoom.
Can you say Hello Dr BoomBoom? Boys girls and asex?

<class of about 30 kids> Hello Dr BoomBoom,

What was that? I can't hear you! One more time with feeling!

<class of about 30 kids> HELLO DR BOOMBOOM!

Much better, now then, your all here because of your moms and dads. Yes? You at the back there!

<Timmy> Are we in trouble?

No son your not in trouble. Your all here because your parents are spacers and they've signed you up for some very important extra curricular lessons.
Boarding party repulsion 101. Now can anyone tell me what this is?

<hands go up there is a high pitched hum of 30 desperate children wanting to answer>

Yes you the blue downy hatchling in the front row, whats your name?

<Scree>SCRRRReeeeeeAAAUUUUCCCHHHHT! Sir!

Ow, yes of course it is. Now as I don't have your fine loud vocal cords young avian, I hope you won't take offence if I just call you scree. Now Scree, what is this?

<Scree> Wark! A mark 2 carbine plasma rifle sir!

Excellent Scree! Anyone else? Over there what is that clamped in the vice at the far end of the table?

<hands go up there is a high pitched hum of 30 desperate children wanting to answer>

You there! The fine iridescent lizard!

<lelock> An etched, heat resistant exterior deckplate sir!

Excellent, excellent Now here comes the fun part!

<click, fffffsssss-sludDoooooom!!, collective gasp from the class>

Can anyone tell me what the rifle has done to the deck plate? Yes you.

<mensa> You blowed it up.

Correct I blowed it up, now can anyone tell me what would happen if you were in a ship, fighting off boarders and you used one of these? What do you think could happen?

<Timmy> We could make a hole and get slurped out.

Put your hand up next time son, but yes your right. That's why we have these:

<collective oooo from the class>

This my young friends is a kinetic projectile weapon, also known as a slugger or fire-arm. Today we'll be teaching you all about these just in case you have to help mommy or daddy fight off any nasty people boarding their ship. Now what's the FIRST lesson of handling any weapon? All together;

<all> Don't point the business end at anything you want to keep!

Do you all want to keep your fingers?

<all> YES!

Do you all want to keep your toes?

<all> YES!

Do we Aaaaalllllll want to keep our Mommy and daddy and our brothers and sisters AND our clones, symbionts etc etc etc?

<all> YES!

Amusing, Clym. :lol:

@Drew,
A few factoids about Derik's sidearm of choice:
L&F Widowmaker mk 4 - It's a big, bulky thing that's been out of production for about 100 years, and has been passed down in the Roh'i family for about as long. Derik carries it because it's intimidating, recharges relatively fast, does a lot of nasty thermal related damage to unarmored flesh, and most importantly - sorry, Clym - doesn't penetrate hull or deck plating. As a plus, it accepts the mounting of an infrared lasersight, which works with his prostetic eye.

Does that help with your tale, Drew?

Just hit 64k yesterday, and I reckon I'm slightly over half done. Mutabilis was 67k in its entirety for reference. This is definitely a behemoth.

Rebecca and Coyote have finally 'negotiated' who's the boss. :wink:

I'm not revealing that. Still mindful of Clym's concerns over Mary Sue characters. None of the characters in the story get to 'win' all the time - though some get very upset about losing... :wink: All of them have foibles, flaws, strengths and weaknesses.

Coyote and Rebecca are rather different in many ways and the same in others. Who is 'better' in a given situation depends on many factors... :wink:

My interpretations of Coyote, Derik, Udian, Daddyhoggy and the others may not be exactly how their 'owners' see them, but I think they'll be pleased with the overall result. Everyone get an important part to play, a bunch of good lines, some 'character development' scenes and, by virtue of my favoured italics, a feeling for their thoughts...

Likewise each character has pretty much had an 'Oh Sh*t' moment where they've gotten out of their depth, and all have made some rather poor decisions at points along the tale...

And on that completely ambiguous summation... Incursio passes 70k words (making it bigger than Mutabilis already), with about 40-50 left to go. Summer looking good again. Aiming to punch this out before I go on holiday on the 13th of August.

I think you're going to enjoy. :twisted:

Cheers,

Drew.
