Cataclysm Problem

I have started Cataclysm and am at the point where I have to escort the Ambassador back to the station.

However when I launch I cannot pick up his ship's transponder. Flying along the corridor reveals that it is free of ambassadors and Thargoid ships.

Jumping out of the system and back in does not help. Nor does restarting the game.

I tried removing the Commies and Galactic Navy OXPs. No joy.

The variables set in my save file are:

Code: Select all

	<key>Cataclysm</key>
<string>Escort Ambassador Davyson safely to Ansois. Then continue your journey to Birera.</string>
	<key>mission_cataclysm</key>
	<string>STAGE6</string>
	<key>mission_cataclysm_ambassador_name</key>
	<string>Davyson</string>
	<key>mission_cataclysm_missions</key>
	<string>ESCORT_AMBASSADOR</string>
	<key>mission_cataclysm_trigger</key>
	<string>24</string>
The mission_cataclysm_trigger seems wrong since, as far as I can tell, it needs to be >87, <98 for the ambassador's ship and the Thargoid ships to be created. On the other hand, I am not familiar with Javascript.

I tried changing this key to 88 but it made no difference.

Can somebody help please?

Cataclysm has a few missions were ships are only added when you read the mission screen. They wont be there anymore when loading a saved game or when you have jumped out of the system. It could be that thargoids have killed him.
Anyhow, these are random missions on your way to the destination system, so forget this one. Maybe you get a new chance later on. This part of the mission is more fun when you do it slowly and head to the final system in as much as possible jumps.

And there was I rushing to save the Ooniverse

Thanks for the tip.

In fact this problem is linked to another one I have. My system overheats under extreme stress. I had just fought in a big battle with lotsa Thargons and my CPU was at 92 deg so I read the screen and shut down.

It is not a problem, its a feature. It will keep your coffee warm during a battle.

That's of course a bug. I hadn't anticipated that between accepting the mission and executing it the player could save and re-load the game, which I should have. Noted for the (long overdue) next version of Cataclysm. Thanks for the report! :D

Immediate remedy: delete the following lines from your save-file:

Code: Select all

   <key>mission_cataclysm_ambassador_name</key>
   <string>Davyson</string>
   <key>mission_cataclysm_missions</key>
   <string>ESCORT_AMBASSADOR</string>
Then you will at least have the chance to get another mission on the next docking. And for the time being, if you get another of these small randomized missions, don't reload your game (you may save it, however) or jump to another system before you've finished it. Except, of course, the mission itself requires you to jump to another system.

Thanks Commander. Now all I need is a fix for the overheating so that I can stay in the game.

And if somebody suggests cold coffee to cool the CPU down I shall laser their ship slowly, prolonging the agony (Unless my CPU heats up of course)

Is the cpu making good thermal contact with its heatsink?
Is the heatsink free of dust?

Yes to both. I have a Nero heatsink - the biggest one I had found and I recently removed it, cleaned it and replaced it using Arctic Silver (as usual).

The system runs cool until Oolite gets very busy, then temperature shoots up.

Typical:

currently (only Firefox and Kmail running) 44 degC
start OpenOffice no change
play a You Tube video 47 deg C
Start Oolite 63 deg
Big fight 75 and creeps up from there
Exit Oolite 56 deg within 2 sec.

It doesn't seem to be an Oolite problem - nobody else has said "Me too". Ambient temps here are up to 34 deg C at the moment so I now suspect that the problem is hardware related.

Time to check for reports about the M/B (Asus M3A)
