Speed-matching cruise control

How hard would it be to make a speed-matching "cruise control" for following either prey or ships to escort at a constant distance? Really useful for following prey, particularly when your lasers are hot...

Considering that speed is read only, quite difficult...
One thing you should be able to do is to add a way to say 'up a bit, down a bit... Ok perfect' to the HUD, just below the reticle, using a similar display method used by the bounty scanner...
And you can use ascii's 'graphics mode', like in the following examples:
a bit too slow...
..|>.<...
way too fast...
...>.<..|
