No voice? (And a couple of other questions)

Is there some magic to getting voices to work? I've tried a few settings (default, English, Scottish, male/female) and never heard it utter a word. Tried with "halsis.oxp" and without any OXPs; nada. I'm using 1.74.2
edit: Yes. Yes there is some magic to it. It's called "opening yours eyes" and setting "Spoken messages" to "On". /facepalm.
It seems I still need the "-nosplash" option on the main PC otherwise it is very sluggish (Windows XPsp3 with an nVidia 7900 and Creative Labs X-Fi Music card) but Ubuntu 10.04 on an ancient Compaq Presario B1015 (it has a nVidia GPU too) runs sweet as a nut. No idea what "-nosplash" does, can't see any difference on the screen bar the initial splash.
There is also a big lag between some sound effects and the related action. e.g witchspace jump and station exit. Is that normal?
