Really, really stupid Graphics card...

So, having just bought some XFX Black Edition 2GB HD 5970s, my boss then sends me a link to a truly stupid card (and it's not based on a 5970 either)

Oddly enough, it's not the performance but the cost and the "theatre" of it that is truly amazing.

This card, at least to me, is the most blatant display of overkill since Hiroshima was nuked.

Seriously, are there any games that need that much GPU horsepower?

As my grandfather would have said...

"If a job is worth doing, it's worth doing well."

Cheers,

That card costs more than my entire computer did.

So, we've had our XFX Black Edition 5970s for less than six months and XFX go and do this: http://www.scan.co.uk/product.aspx?ProductId=38996

Double the memory (4GB), double the number of display outputs (6) and almost double the price (£900!)

See, even at the top end, it doesn't take long to become "old hat"

might as well get used to that! i'm surprised it took 6 months, actually, lol.

TBH, i was having this debate w/ a guy at work, and i've never understood the frantic urge to get things running at 60FPS etc. Cinema works great at 24FPS, i'd think anything over 35 is just pointless. 2500ppi? how many monitors have that resolution anyway? i'd far prefer them to design a car that would run smooth as silk up to say 40fps, and instead keep the noise, heat and power draw way way down.

Movies in the cinema look great at 24fps because of motion blur. Normally this is missing from games, so higher framerates are required to compensate. It's only recently that games have started incorporating blur techniques to create the effect of smoother animation, but still, it is not that simple. There is an interesting discussion of the subject here.

Excellent little guide and FPScompare is a great little program that I'm sure I can use in a lecture! Great find A_C!
