Anyone know of a good sound extractor/ editor?

I love the laser sounds from these clips.

Terminator 2 Future War plasma weapons.

Plus other various sounds. I want to try to extract the sounds from these clips and then mix and play with them with the end result of replacing the standard Oolite sounds. Any ideas?

The most common sound editor that gets mentioned, is Audacity. It is available for Windows, Linux and Mac.

Have used it on occasion myself. For Oolite, I used it to convert MP3 music to OGG format for use with the Random Docking Music OXP. It worked really well.

However, not sure whether it can extract the sound from video clips. I would quite like to be able to do this myself.

SUPER will rip just audio from video streams (as will VLC I think) and then you can re-encode (SUPER will do this too)

SUPER is Windows only I think (although it uses Open Source Libraries)

Audacity does include the ability to record sounds from your computer. Its possible that you could play the video and record the sound as it plays?

I think i found an extractor called Aoa extractor.

As for audacity yes i just found it LOL!

I don't know any about youtube videos, my PC is too weak to play them properly anyway.

Get the clips in mpg or avi format, I'd say and then use video editing software to demux the part you want.

For avi files I use VirtualDub.

For troublesome wmv videos I use winamp. (works for avi, mpg and probably even flv, too)
Play the video with the output plugin "DiskWriter" - it saves the audio stream to disk, it can convert to wanted file format and even resample on the fly.

And yes, Audacity for changing the sound with filters and such.
