Thanks Daddy!

As for concepts, I remember the last project I was hung on was a mothership for the tiger-gang.

The concept was to be a carrier with a flat open landing deck on the upper deck (launching port obscured somehow to avoid popping into existence of launched ships, possibly by an overhanging bridge section),
The idea was to allow launching only forward and docking only from behind.

Spars and masts with flashy lights,
a holographic/neon pirate flag (which would now be possible with the new shader developments!)

bit of a cross of the HW1 destroyer (taiidan) a wooden manowar/frigate and a modern carrier.

The overall appearance should be a bit shoddy and cobbled together, they are just pirates afterall.

I'd love to have it fire broadsides, but Oolite AI would not handle sidemounted subentity lasers well at the time. Any change in that?

Well, instead of using lasers you could use assorted turrets, Frame seems to have got some decent results with those:

yeah, I did that with the ATT1, it worked pretty well.

but I think I will leave those for point-defence. fast firing and such.
I don't remember if the plasma-bolt speed and appearance could be altered... colour and yield can IIRC... i'd rather have PDfire displayed as orange streaks/pulses rather than slow balls.

edit:
I think i'll have to study the work of Leiji_Matsumoto for good pirate motherships. :p

Out of boredom I made this artist impression.

A Gazscooper burns through the atmosphere of a Gas Giant.

The Gasses go directly into the 4 thanks.

Space cruisers - not liners from A to B but recreational shi

Inspired by the RMS Titanic-in-space post...

Current world:
- Concorde used to do flights for astronomers. People like windows on their aircraft - but don't get them.
- Amateur astronomy clubs exist whose members fly round the world to see interesting phenomena.
- There is huge demand for cruise ships. It is the chance to see things one would not otherwise see.
- There are the glass-bottomed trip boats for seeing coral and fish.

Future Ooniverse:
I think there would be a strong demand for luxury space-going recreational passenger vessels covered in windows. One half all lit up (5 star restaurants, bars, recreation areas) and the other half in darkness which would be apparent by all the huge black panorama windows set into the brilliant white P&OO hull. How much would you pay for a planetarium that uses a real backdrop?

(P&OO = Planets & Ooniverse Observatories Cruises)

I'm thinking of a cylindrical vessel, or maybe triangular in cross-section. Or is it a pyramid? Does it rotate VERY slowly according to the presentation schedule? Is it consistent along its length, or does it have sticky-out bits for the crew in carge, like modern cruise ships do?

It would just bimble between the space station aegis, the witchpoint and the sun, over and over and only in stable systems. No escort, but the GalCops, bounty hunters and rescue ships would turn up fast. Also, if under attack, could it launch lifeboat ships? Not escape pods, lifeboat ships.

Lifeboat ships

Lifeboat ships? Not escape pods, lifeboat ships.

Unarmed, loads of defence shields, loads of flashers, bright orange, launched from big ships when they are under attack?

Fitted with the same beacons as escape pods.

Attract GalCop escorts?

Science experiments / probes

We fill the oceans and skies and the ground with science experiment equipment. We have just started (this past 50 years) putting them in space too.

Wouldn't there be space telescopes, sun-monitors, asteroid trackers and all manner of other crap valuable equipment in space?

Appearing as white blobs on the radar as asteroids do, but normally no larger than splinters (maybe some as big as boulders), these bits of gear would be anywhere in a system doing who-knows-what.

Scooping one might sometimes give 1 tonne of computers.

They might be tubes, boxes, X-shaped thingies, long strips of solar panel.

Ramming one would barely register on the front shield.

I thought someone might say that, hence the description I gave. Not a vast luxury yacht with escorts and shuttles, more like a posh ferry. With a blacked-out flank.

That's what the Emerald is kinda (including the restaurants if you read Drew's work), although there's not a planetarium skin for it (although there could be if you bribe PAGroove with enough Euro).

Plus a blacked-out ship would look very odd in the game, like a floating monolith, or just weird if that side ended up illuminated by the sun.

Very, very rarely, one might come across one of The Ancient Probes.

Inspiration could be from any of these: link and images.

So? Why should things not look odd?

Would having "Monsieur Toossoods Planetarium Space Toors" painted on the side on 30 metre high letters help?
