Crashes at startup after setting change

Post by Chrisfs »

OOlite now crashes when I start up. I switched OOlite to start in full screen,
it crashes at startup (I see the small logo window and then it crashes)
When I started it from a terminal window, I got the message.
The last thing I was doing was attempting to cycle through the resolutions on the F2 screen (whlle docked) and when I hit the arrow key it went blank and crashed and refuses to boot up.

chris@chris-home:~$ oolite

Erk. It looks like Oolite died with an error. When making an error

Have you tried launching Oolite.exe with -nosplash on the command line?

If that doesn't work, try deleting your .GNUstepDefaults file (find it in your /Oolite/OoliteApp/GNUstep/ folder). Back it up first though.

@Jaz,

While trying -nosplash is a good first try, it doesn't fix every problem that could possibly rear an ugly head. And this
chris@chris-home:~$ oolite
is a Linux terminal prompt, thusly no oolite.exe.

Deleting .GNUstepDefaults may do the trick, if that is what's borked. Oolite will regenerate a new one when it's started. If that fails, then there could be a deeper issue going on.

Thanks for ideas,

Still not fixed after deleting defaults file.
I suspect something weird with video driver. Though changing to 1024x768, hasn't fixed it either.

It sure looks like an X server driver module fail.

Misconfigured X-org.conf file, maybe? :?

It might help to post the contents of the Oolite log file. The experts can use that info to pin the problem down.

hmm. The log says the driver is loading, it's reporting the presence of OpenGL and lists all the extensions. All your oxps and scripts are loading without errors.

But this is an old logging, before the crashes began. It wouldn't have a chance to create a new log when a crash occurs.

FYI, I see here you're running an older version of the Caduceus Damage Control Node script. There's a newer version available to fix a couple of bugs; see this thread.
I don't think that has anything to do with your crash problem, though.

For me the date in

Code: Select all

looks quit recent when comparing with the posting time: "Posted: Thu Feb 11, 2010 3:06 am". It could be one of your oxp's doing that. I normally rename my addOns folder to ~addOns and reboot. That way no oxps are loaded and when it still crashes you can rule out the oxp's

Thanks for the idea.

Tried with no OXPs, still happens.

Maybe it's a version hickup - any old versions installed? GNUStep version would be interesting too.

Hi Chris,

You've basically toggled to a full-scree resolution which crashes on your machine.

To fix, delete your GNUStep cache folder:

Code: Select all

$ rm ~/GNUStep/Library/Caches/Oolite-cache.plist
Hope this helps,
- Micha.

[edit]PS The logging error is not dangerous. I can't remember the details of why it occurs, but it was only a warning.[/edit]

That’s non-lethal (and has been fixed for 1.74).

An idea -

Chris,
Do you have any other games or apps that use OpenGL installed on your Linux machine? If so, try launching them.
If they crash as well, then I think we can safely rule out your Oolite install going south.

Even if he hasn't there are quite a few graphical apps that are quick to download that use OpenGL - including a raft of Screensavers from the repository - but I like your thinking - perhaps OGL is fubar?

That's entirely possible. In his original error report, there's an X server error code that looks like the display driver suddenly fell flat on it's face.

Code: Select all

X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 130 (XFree86-VidModeExtension)
Minor opcode of failed request: 10 (XF86VidModeSwitchToMode)
Value in failed request: 0x189
Serial number of failed request: 178
Current serial number in output stream: 180
It would be interesting to see if this occurs with other OGL apps, since attempts to fix Oolite directly got nowhere.

Process of elimination, y'know.
