Oolite Newbie, Elite Veteran...

Hello everyone,

I am new to Oolite, I played with it a couple of years ago, but didn't have the time to get into Oolite like I was into the original Elite.
Back in 1984 I played Elite on a BBC Master computer, with 2 5.25" floppy drives and a 128kB memory expansion card.
Back then that was one of the fastest machines available and a considerable investment.
I still have the BBC computer and Elite still works from the 5.25" floppy :D
I never got any further than "Deadly" rating, as I was looking for a third mission, but never found it...

Now on to Oolite.
I installed the latest version, I blieve it was 1.73.4, looked at all the addons and downloaded a lot of them and installed them.
So far so good, I even changed the key layout to the old-style Elite layout and all the addons work.

But...
Although I only installed addons that add ships and 2 missions that won't work until I get 1000 kills or visit galaxy 7, when I fly from Lave to Zaonce :( the first time I am greeted by a squadron of about 12 ships that all attack me and I have no chance with just a pulse laser.

Does anyone have any idea what ship addon could be responsible?
Here is the list of the adons I added:

Hello Belgarath!

The offender is eagle2.oxp. It creates a ridiculous amount of hostile Eagles in the Zaonce system.

If you want to keep the OXP itself, but don't want to get jumped by them, just open the OXP folder and the Config folder therein. Then delete or rename the planetinfo.plist inside it. It does nothing else than creating these ships. Restart Oolite holding the SHIFT key until you see the spinning Cobra III, in order to flush the game's cache, because otherwise the change may not be recognized.

Likewise greetings.

You've also got a couple of duplicates in there (aegidian-specials.oxp and Kopie von aegidian-special.oxp plus Saleza v2.1.oxp and Saleza v2.oxp for example) which can be weeded out a bit.

Also if you're still in G1, you don't need Assassins. That's set in G7 and does nothing until you get there.

Won't fix your Zaonce problem (as McLane already did that), but just for general smooth running - there's no point in running stuff that's just taking up clock cycles and not adding anything yet to the game.

Commander McLane, Thargoid,

Thanks for the advice guys, I hadn't noticed the double OXPs yet, I'll remove them.
Also a lot of thanks for solving my Zaonce problem, I deleted the offending OXP.

I'm running all this on my laptop, which has no problem with the graphics or the amount of OXPs, but for general gameplay, would you guys recommend I start playing with fewer OXPs?
I thought adding all those ships would give me more options to buy and more eye-candy in space.

Thnx,
Belgarath

Well you've got to watch out for the odd nasty oxp wise, one which makes the game a chunk harder. But mainly a lot of the programmers worked out that by ramping things up in later galaxies gave players a breathing space in G1.

I hope you enjoy sailing past a Kirin when you see one! Oh and remember to take a look at the vector maps. Happy trading commander!

Take out CMcL's Cataclysm (will be started a lot later) and my Localhero (doesn't work in v1.73.4 at all). Cheerio

I see you have Killit.oxp in your list. You don't really need this one, it was mostly made as a joke aimed at the people who create superweapons and stuff, without any sense of balance. I mean, do you really need to deploy the PandoraWeapon or the OMGWTFBBQWeapon at any time in the game for anything other than a laugh? ;-)

oah, I liked killit. :D The forum discussion was pure gold. I haven't had that amount of fun since I tripped over a pack of trumbles whilst carrying a large bowl of industrial strength lubricant. Matted fur? Suits you sir!

Again thanks for the great tips.
Zaonce is ok again now, as suggested I deleted planetinfo.plist and all is good again.

Now to my next question, a different HUD.
To try out a different HUD I installed Trek Hud and it works, but I like the looks of the Wolfwood Hud better, I installed the oxp and deleted all other huds from the addons folder, but my standard Cobra MkIII still shows the build in HUD.
I checked the Wolfwood Hud folder, there are files for a Cobra Mk III hud.

Can anyone help, or am I being stupid?

Danny

You installed the HUD with wolfwoods_variants.oxp, right?
I just looked inside the package, either I'm missing something or it's nowhere set that the Cobra 3 get's the new HUD...
Not entirely sure how to fix this, though :/ I'll try it out a bit.

Edit: open wolfwoods_variants.oxp and rename the cobra3-hud.plist inside Config to hud.plist. That should do the trick.

And so it did... Thanks you very much!
I love the wolfwoods hud :D

Been playing all evening and have made a lot of cash by buying up the alloys offered inside behemots for 0.4 credits and selling it in stations for 40 :-).
The game did crash a couple of times during the docking sequence in space stations.
Some exe with an unrecoverable error.
The next time it happens I'll try to get more info on the error.

Another good trick similar to this, is to find Rock Hermits and buy up all their precious metals and gems. Then, I keep them for a while until I can find the best price for them. The good thing about these is that as they are in kg/g quantities, they ride with you in your cabin's safe and don't take up cargo space. So you can afford to keep them around when you are doing normal trading.

So a good oxp to have is the Rock Hermit locator!

That's weird. Never happened to me. Possibly a clash with another program?

As my laptop is quite slow, I tend to run Oolite with not many other programs in memory. This might be a good way to avoid clashes too!

Welcome to the boards, Belgarath! It's good to see another disciple of Aldur around the forums!

I have been flying between Lave and Zaonce about 4 times now, but the Behemot ships where I could dock and buy the alloys for 0.4 cr. are gone.
I guess they jump around between systems too.

I'm not sure what causes the crashes.
I did have to upgrade to the latest drivers from intel for the build in graphics card to get shader effects to work at all.
I am playing with shader effects set to full, maybe thats part of the problem.
I Have also noticed in the Oolite logs that some OPXs did not load correctly or had errors, I removed some, these are the errors left in the logs:

[dataCache.rebuild.pathsChanged]: Cache is stale (search paths have changed). Rebuilding from scratch.
[shipData.load.begin]: Loading ship data...
