What does this mean? Alarm after WitchSpace

Made a witchspace jump... DURING the jump the alarm (warning sound) sounded.

In the new system nothing was wrong. All equipment was fine. I DID need a maintenance overhaul upon docking, but not really any sooner than expected.

The only thing I can think of: I was traveling from a confederacy to a corporate state... MAYBE a ship decided to turn hostile just before I jumped? Except that I was still within the previous station aegis...

The only thing there in the new system just after the jump was a fuel station... made it to dock without incident...

This is unique, has never happened to me before.

=====

More stuff, not worth their own posts or thread:

(1) I made "MY" first modification to Oolite. I searched for a mod / OXP that would retexture the asteroids and rock hermits away from that overly bright low contrast almost featureless grayish white. Couldn't find a SIMPLE OXP to do that.

So I found the 'roid texture... *BACKED IT UP*... and instead of making an OXP (which I could still do but why bother), I loaded it into PaintShopPro. Colorized it quite a bit... increased the contrast a LOT... darkened it, but no so dark that it had no albedo. Now I have nice, brownish-reddish stony asteroids and rock hermits, the craters are visible... and a unique color/tint... they are recognizeable as asteroids from a distance (rather than "What could that be? A big ship? A station? An asteroid? Space-ghosts? A big wad of Space-Chewing-Gum?")

Since I have both the original and modified textures backed up, there is no need to make an OXP folder out if it. Turning it into an OXP (I reason) rather than using it as a replacement texture in the \textures folder would just demand a resource (albeit a small one).

Yay for me.

(2) I struggled with trying to add an avatar today. I was thinking "what is this, some weird Vista UAC thing? I've uploaded avatars to other boards before".... THEN I did a search, and found out why. "Gosh Darn It". I had such a cool li'l 'ol avatar prepared. A PURTY little thing! Oh, well.

For the benefit of board members from various countries - I am from Texas, USA ... and I live in Texas. Texans can sometimes lapse into a kind of "Southern TexasSpeak". Words like "purty" (pretty). L'il 'ol = "little old", more or less meaning "cute"; "She was a purty l'il old lady" (but not necessarily OLD - could mean a "hot babe"). Phrases like "That was a real FROG STRANGLER we had last night!" (a severe storm). "Wrap my possum pail around my corn fritters" (okay that is more... Kentucky or Appalachian Mountains than Texas, but I've heard it here). When it's time to take the cat to the veterinarian (and you KNOW cats are telepathic), one might find oneself exclaiming "Come back here, ya varmit!"

God bless Texas! 8)

The asteroid modification you created sounds great. Good job.

And, allow me to offer you my personal welcome to the Oolite forums.

Sincerely,
CptnEcho

I don't know whether a warning sound is played, but if your ship had a fuel leak caused by the jump you might not have noticed it - the ship will leak all fuel after arriving at the target system if that's the case...

Hmmm... maybe that was it then... darn, I didn't (specifically) notice if fuel was too low (lower than normal) or gone... an Overhaul indicator WAS there upon docking, but I assumed that it was just simply due.

Oh well. "Its a mystery".

And just like the signs along the highways here say... "DONT MESS WITH TEXAS".

Here, we shoot people for littering!

(hehe - just kidding)

(or maybe not)

Any chance of us seeing that new texture you made? ;)

Here ya go:

What a Rock Hermit looks like now (Flickr resized to 1024x640, but MY shot is 1680x1050... my native screen resolution):
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2655/423 ... d997_b.jpg

... you can also see an asteroid in the upper left corner area, in the (not so) distance...

The altered asteroids.png:

(EDIT): It's not an OXP - it just a replacement in the TEXTURES folder.
I would back up the original before changing or replacing it.

It’s sufficient to rename it to asteroid.png (not asteroids.png) and put it in your AddOns folder.

No need for backing up when you stay away from changing Oolite itself. Just rename above file into "asteroid.png" and drop it into your addOns folder. This texture than will be used on the next startup instead of the internal file.

What is the similarity between Belgium and Texas?

Both use a Lambertian coordinate system for their maps. Its a projection system that is very suitable for east-west oriented countries.

Sorry for that, but somehow I associate Texas with maps because when gooling on those coordinate systems I always ended up at sites in Texas.

Do you know Asteroid Storm.oxp? That doesn't re-texture the original asteroids, but adds a lot more nicely textured asteroids to the mix.

... I think I downloaded that and looked at it...

I wanted a SIMPLE thing that would change the look of asteroids ... just one simple texture.

Thanks for that. Downloaded your texture and as instructed, just dropped it into Addons.

Works a treat!

Glad you like it then! (my first positive contribution to the game).

Whats good about it... keep an eye out when you enter new systems. Sometimes there are asteroid clusters near the witchspace point. With this texture, you can recognize and spot them immediately... whereas before, it was harder to do, you just didn't notice asteroids from a distance.

... and for me, it encourages the hunt for Rock Hermits. Platinum, Gold, and Gemstones, oh my!
