Galactic Mean Time?

I was just curious... because I like to know everything... at least I like to "know a lot".
In a new game the Galactic Mean Time is 2084004:HH:MM:SS. I *was* thinking that maybe that was year 2084, day 4, HH:MM:SS.
But I did an experiment (before I threw away my last savegame... reasons are in another post) to deliberately verify this... the time advanced to 208437x:HH:MM:SS... in other words more than 366 days (actually I think I just took it up to day 368 or something).
Therefore it is NOT YYYYDDD:HH:MM:SS, but something else. Two million eighty four thousand and four days from... something. What "Epoch" is the Oolite canon based on? Or is it arbitrary?
