Thought that this BBS could do with a list of the standard missions (to help newbies to the game). Tried not to give away spoilers!! Let me know if I have made any mistakes.

Trumbles - You get offered a trumble (tribble). No reward (??).

Constrictor Hunt - Find and destroy the Constrictor. Rewarded 5,000 credits plus 256 kills.

Thargoid Plans - Deliver the Thargoid Plans. Rewarded Naval Energy Unit.

Nova Mission - Save people from a star going Nova. Rewarded 100g Gems.

Cloaking Device Mission - Find and destroy an Asp. Rewarded Cloaking Device.

Hmm, have you had a look at this wiki page?

http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Oolite_Missions

I hadn't heard of the 'Cougar', so I'm quite intrigued, we've got a cloaked asp as far as I know!

Well that has spoilers, and doesn't list the missions in the correct order.

I must admit that I've only done up to the Constrictor Hunt on Oolite so far. So the rest is from memory of Elite.

The Cougar was the cloaking equipped ship on the Spectrum version of Elite. Definately not an Asp! Perhaps we need to ask the question!? ;)

Searched Google for info on the Cougar. It appears that Ian Bell designed the ship. From his website I've gleaned the following info:

COUGAR
Size 70
Energy 252
Speed 40
Missiles 4
Max Loot 3t
Bounty 0.0

C64 didn't have a cloak but a very powerful ship with strange geometry ;)

Here, it's definitely a group of Asps of which one has the cloak.

The Cougar did not exist in the Spectrum ship set. It looks like it was the ship carrying the cloaking device on the Amiga version (and maybe others). Source: http://www.nvg.org/bbc/doc/games/EliteFAQ.htm

I think that simply mentioning the existence of missions is a spoiler in itself, though. Why not let newcomers discover that there is much much more to do in this game, just when they think they have seen it all?

I know what it is. It was in the ST/Amiga (Mr Micro) version. I remember doing the mission. The ship disappeared and reappeared, usually hitting you with a pulse of high energy laser power when it appeared. Was difficult to destroy, but on its destruction, left behind the cargo pod containing the cloaking device.

I myself tried searching for details on the missions a few weeks back, when I first found Oolite! :D

It does get confusing when you have played three versions of Elite - BBC, Spectrum, ST, plus Frontier on the ST. ;)

I just "discovered" Oolite 2 days ago... having a blast with it, so far only 5 OXPs installed. Did some research... I'm under the *IMPRESSION* that Cloaking Device comes BEFORE Nova? Maybe the trigger is sensitive to exact location/system though.

Welcome to the board!

It depends upon which galaxy you are in and how many jumps you did in there. Thus it's possible not to cause the nova mission start before you leave for the next galaxy.

Found a bit more info on the Elite FAQ (found at http://www.nvg.org/bbc/doc/games/EliteFAQ.htm):
Cloaking / Masking Device
-------------------------
Reports of a ship in a nearby sector which is fitted with some sort
of a masking device. Destroy it. It is intermittently invisible to
both radar and sight and cannot be missile targetted. It is one of
the 3 Asps you encounter on first entering the system, and when you
engage, Constrictors (fawn, blunt) and Cougars (red, blue and black,
with rectangular wings) come to its aid. Novel, eh?
Believed variant: Master & Tube Elites: Cloaked ship is a Cougar.
No Constrictors present.
Reward: A masking device (so long as you manage to retrieve it!)

I am with a_c here. I don't think there needs to be information about the built-in missions in a special thread here on the boards. The information is available on the Wiki for everybody who searches for it. And he who doesn't search will be surprised--and probably wants to be surprised.

Also the Wiki Missions page is sufficiently linked from other Wiki pages (like the FAQ), so I don't think you will miss it if you want to read it.

I agree with a_c and McLane... one of the joys of the original was the surprise of a new mission.
