[Solved] GeForce 6100 performance issue

Hi!

I'd like to see more detail and frames per second in the Ooniverse and decided to replace the onboard GFX (a simple GeForce 6100 nForce 430 that takes its gxf ram from the main memory) with something to plug into the PCIX16 slot.

I've heard that NVIDIA would be a good choice if I would use the nvidia non-GPL drivers - but what card type would I need?

On the one hand there is the simple GeForce 210 cards with 512 MB for 40-55 Euro, on the other hand there are cards like the GeForce 9800GT that have 512 MB, too, but cost about 130 Euro.

Is the cheaper one sufficient, or would I need the bigger bang for the bigger buck?

Yours, Christian

The GeForce 210 does support all the Oolite features, so you can definitely see all the shaderified ships with that one.

The thing is, there is no such thing as enough speed. No matter how fast a card is, there's always going to be something faster round the corner, I'd be tempted to go for the 9800, but saying that, I've been using a 7300 for ages, and I'm not going to change it for a while yet! :)

I just found out that the onboard GFX can kick ass. All I had to do was to install the nvidia driver instead of the default nv one. Now I have shaders and all, and still over 60 FPS. What a difference to "anything but wireframe" and 23 FPS...

I think I'll skip the new card for the time being.

Yours, Christian
