Welcome Matt (oops - fnarr! fnarr!) - In fact Welcome Mat is a very nice OXP, this question gets asked a lot and the answers always boils down to "What do you want your Oolite experience to be?"

If you like eye-candy and have a good machine with shader capability then fill your boots with eye candy:

Griff's Ships OXPs (individually or in the one biggie download)

If you want to change the core ship designs to something more modern and less "original like" then Simon B's neolite ship replacement pack is very nice,

All of the extra station packs - gritty coriolis, pagroove stations, trade station, YAH, black monks, GRS etc.

Famous Planets, System Redux, all lovely eye candy.

YAH falls into my 2nd category - fun, as does Snoopers.

Missions - Long Way Round, Baron, Asteroid Storm (Chart 1 missions) plus Random Hits.

There's a multitude of extra equipment - missiles oxp, target reticle, fuel tanks, refueller that will all enhance your gaming experience if you wish for it to be enhanced

But they will all drag you slightly further away from the original feel of the original Elite - however, I think they're all bonus, positive enhancements.

I can't recommend the big catchall that is RS or OSE because my machine doesn't run them so I have no experience of them.

For me, it's things that make Oolite prettier, enhance trading opportunities and make it more fun.

Of course YMMV.

But enjoy, that's the key, whatever you put in, you can take back out if it turns out not to be for you...

Ta for the reply. I'm here for the nostalgia, but truth be told the original without improvements won't hold my attention for long!

I'll try the oxps you mention. Whats OSE? I found RS ok.

Fundamentally oolite without OXPs is elite, and that is why most people find it intially.

I would suggest you play it for a bit and decide what you want more of: more variety of ships? more missions? more pretty graphics, or all of the above.

Personally I dont want to see starwars, startrek and other ships in oolite, nor do I want adverts everywhere, but I do like missions, so thats what I install. Its all about making the game what you want.

If you like RS, you'll most probably like OSE which has been (while in work) renamed to Oolite Extended Project ;)

Since no-one has mentioned them yet:

Anarchies & Commies are great 'flavour' OXPs - they change the look & feel of Anarchy and Communist systems significantly, adding a few different types of ships and stations into the mix - some, unfortunately not quite as 'Elite-y' as I'd like, but overall I wouldn't want to play without them anymore. Be aware that they do change the core gameplay a little as well though - they are not just 'eye candy'.

2 'must haves' for me are Deep Space Pirates and Sun Skimmers which help to populate the Ooniverse away from the main space lane from the witchpoint to the planet. It just feels weird and cheating to only have a narrow spacelane populated - a common strategy here is to fly at an angle away from the space lane and then Torus-drive all the way to the planet undisturbed - no matter how supposedly dangerous a system they are in.

But at the end of the day you have to decide how you want your Ooniverse - the OXPs are only building blocks to expand upon the core game. Try the ones which sound interesting to you and see how they change your game.

I would suggest to to just install a few from the wiki page, look how you like them and than ad a few more. And throw those out you don't like. The ships are from all kind of different authors and some are just awesome and others don't fit in style with the majority.

I certainly would add the flavour oxps: systemRedux and cargo_wreck

You are right, they don't work together because both try to replace Oolite internal ships. And as Griff his method to replace them loads later, Griff his ships winn in the replacement process. But not all ships are currently finished by Griff, so for those not added by Griff, you still see the ones from neolite.
(In my personal copy I edited the neolite ships so they both DO work together  )

If you have Realistic Shipyards installed then you are spoilt for ships already  A couple of suggestions...
UPS Courier - generates small missions with some toughies thrown in, great for picking a direction to travel
Your Ad Here - some eye candy, some trading opportunities and when combined with...
Oo-haul - (should be in already if you are using RS) a ship and some gentle cruising fun :)
Hoopy Casino - even if you don't play hoops it is a useful place to have when you start collecting precious metals & gems

Have downloaded a bunch of oxp's following recommendations. Thanks all.

The Blitzspear_clan.oxp downloads as a .rar file, the only one I can't access. Aside from buying winzip, has anyone got a tip for accessing the contents?

Cheers All!
