Hitch-Hikers

I’ve been doing a few passenger contracts, setting myself the test of not saving the game until the contract is fulfilled.
Last night, looking at the contract screen in some system, it occurred to me that it would be cool to see a Hitch-Hiker,
trying to get a free ride. If they are going my way and I already have a paying customer on board, why not?

It could be an ordinary character, just trying to get somewhere. Or it could be a space tramp.
Or maybe a criminal of some sort, and just by giving them a ride, your status might change to offender or fugitive.
Or a roving reporter for “The Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Ooniverse”. Or someone mysterious…

Some may leave an unexpected reward for their passage , some may not.
It seemed that there could be some interesting possibilities…

Just the sort of idea that pops up in the early hours, when you’ve been cruising the space lanes a little too long.

Not possible to script at the moment, but Oolite 1.74 will have a few changes that were announced here, that make this possible for an oxp.

This is similar to an idea I had a while ago, about running into this pair guys who need a ride out fast One is a young guy and one is an older guy who keeps spouting mystic mumbo jumbo, and they are both need a ride to Alderan (or similar planet).

My ship has policies to deal with stowaways & hitchhikers appropriately.

Good customers who pay for passage are welcome.

To quote a bumper-sticker: "Ass, grass or cash, nobody rides for free".
