As I said before, I believe this feature goes way back.

Select long range destination with the cursor.
The system name appears under the find planet function.
Type in the name.
Destination is marked in green.
Go to short range chart and select system to jump to with cursor.
Jump and long range destination persists until reached.

I did notice that shift+8 (i.e. screenshot) disappears the green square, although it still appears in the screenshot.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

I managed to keep it up for one jump following your procedure El Viejo. After looking at the Galactic Chart immediately after the jump to be sure that the marker was still there, I went to Front View, then immediately back to Galactic Chart and the marker was gone.

I think I'll just give up on that, there is obviously something that is not consistent here. Just to be sure, you are running Mac or Windows?

Running Windows XP Pro 32-bit SP3.

I think I'll download 1.65 and check it there.

I'm really starting to believe that feature didn't work on windows, but did on macs. (No idea what happened with linux, but I'm inclined to think it worked there too, based on the odd trunk bug I saw yesterday.)

El Viejo, as I said before, we need to figure out what behaviour we want to have.

I've been developing / playtesting mostly on windows (I'm on a windows system right now) so I never noticed the original behaviour you're describing. Same goes for A_C.

This evening I'll get a chance to see what happens with 1.72.2 on a mac, and I'll see what can be done. In 1.72.2 the data the galaxy chart was based on couldn't be altered, (this caused some problems when renaming a system) now the assumption is that the data is subject to change without notification.

I haven't actually seen the behaviour you describe yet, but if one system stays highlighted wiht 1.72.2 on macs, chances are that if you get 2 or three highlighted systems, they stay highlighted too.

It shouldn't be too much of a problem to keep one system highlighted, even through a name change, but there might be reasons (only known to the oxp makers) to deselect it.
When we have 2 or more systems selected, we'd definitely need to do some changes to the old behaviour. That means they match the original search string. If one of the names changes, they need to be deselected too.

edit: EV, just missed your post. I'm on windows too, (xp sp3) and I haven't seen that behaviour... weird.

To me, this function is much more useful than shift+6.
I'd really like to have it back, but that's up to you Devs. I'm just a Pilot.

Thank you, Commodore, that would be a boon.

I just tried to load Elite Plus to check there, but couldn't get it to run right.
Maybe later.

You'll be pleased to know that I've managed to implement what I hope is a good replacement for what you were talking about earlier:

When you type anything after Find planet: on the long range map you'll see a bunch of highlighted systems, the first one is highlighted on the screen.
You can toggle through all the matching planetary systems using shift & arrow keys.

Whenever you leave the long range galaxy map, the highlighted system is kept in memory, and will still be visible after a load / save, no matter how many jumps made, etc... until you use Find planet: again to look for a diferent system.

By the way, I know I'm talking to deaf ears, but the feature we 'removed' in 1.73 never actually existed, hence it was 'a bit' difficult to reproduce the behaviour you talked about. It seems that what you saw was a byproduct of some weird memory management issues: almost identical systems showed different things in the long range map, and I can't even begin to figure out why that would be so.

Do try out one of Diziet Sma's trunk builds, and let us know what you think! :D

PS & OT: Oi, I saw that bird first!

Thank you very much, Kaks. I appreciate that. I will try out trunk just to have a look.

I find it kind of fitting with the mystique of Elite/Oolite that I was using a function that did not exist.
I wonder if there are others. If there are, rest assured that I will find them.

PS. See you in a gin joint, sometime.

Kaks.

Just used Diziet's latest build (thanks Diziet, very easy to use) to test.

It works perfectly. Just took a simple route from Lezaer to Edraisar, and then the return via a different route. The long range destination persists, no matter what, including saves and exit/restarts. (Very large grin). I named this Commander "Magellan" (both for the great seafarer/navigator and the old search engine).

Again, many, many thanks.

(This is probably an illusion, but 1.74 trunk felt smoother. Same frame rate, but...)

Yet another satisfied customer! :D

You're very welcome, El Viejo. Just remember.. trunk can be a double-edged sword.. but I'm sure you read my warnings already..

P.S.
I've just updated to SVN2612.. so some strange crashes should now be fixed too..
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

BTW, Kaks,

I've awarded myself five team points and a gold star for imagining and using a non-existant function, that when implemented, turns out to be very useful.

The Ooniverse is strange, at times (as is it's RL counterpart).
