Wow, pretty impressive.
I wonder how many 'duds' they shot before reaching this quality, must've been a lot of trial and error...

Indeed.I've done something like this a long time ago with a kids toy and a laser pointer but my camera had a max exposure time of 10s. Still looked pretty fine though.

Lengthy exposure times and perhaps also multiple exposures combined with photo editing software.
