Be forewarned - There is a rather unpleasant bug in the 1.73 release that prevents the upgrading of your lasers.

Thats no bug, 1.73 is just a pacifist version of Oolite.

Really? I'm using oolite 1.73 and my lasers upgrade fine. Then again, I'm using an old trunk build ...

@Wacky
There is a difference between DS's trunk builds (of which I am EXTREMELY grateful) and the actual 1.73 Test Release.
The trunk builds were just that - trunk builds.
1.73 Test Release is an actual subversion of the code that is "spun off" and is the first release that should technically be called 1.73. Once a version is "spun off" like this, it can be bug-fixxed, but no new features added. New features would be added to Trunk, and that would eventually become 1.74 when it was spun off...
Kind of hard to explain. It's a developer thing...

Didn't realise about the bug, so this only effects when bought and not if you already have military lasers in your save file?

Yes. And if you want to purchase a new ship, simply buy it, save and edit the savedgame. The forward weapon is set to 0. Change it. Save the changes and fire up Oolite...

There will be a 1.73.0.1 issued fairly soon, Rusty. It will fix this. They're just giving it a little time to see if there are any other major showstoppers that slipped through the cracks, I'd imagine.

Yes another annoying bug with use of the h-key has slipped in. Both are already fixed now. But please use 1.73 as some bugs happen only on certain hardware and might have not occurred by the testers. Now with wider use those bugs are more likely to surface. But we must give them some time to surface before releasing a 1.73.1
Not buying a laser is not that big a problem for most as they never change lasers with their commander. (and in case you want: save game, quit oolite, load the game with 1.72, buy the laser, quit again and load again with 1.73.)
And before anybody blames his keybord: The h-key sometimes not working will also be fixed in 1.73.1
