but may have been punished

while playing arround with a save game, i gave myself a cloaking device! very shocking i know- but its not my main save game- just at testing one

well i added the relevant lines to the save game, loaded up oolite, checked the equipment list, there it was- launched, turned it on,- all well and good

then started shooting some stuff trying to dock

BUT, the Galcops could still see me, they ate me alive!!!

anyone know anything about these matters?

Well, two possibilities:

(1) You didn't hack your save-file correctly.

or

(2) You managed to un-cloak before the cops killed you. This would be possible in two ways:

(a) You pressed the cloaking key again.

or

(b) Your energy got too low to maintain the cloak (the cloaking device uses energy, and your lasers use energy; so keep an eye on your energy bars when firing whilst cloaked).

oh i expect i didnt hack the save file correctly

i merely put in EQ_CLOAKING_DEVICE .... etc.... true

but as i say, it showed on the list, and in space allowed me to turn it on, and a message came up telling me it was on when i swithched it on!

tho i notice in the save file, that there are mission keys as well, and they only appear once you are ready for them- maybe this has something to do with it

It looks like you just ran out of energy. What kind of ship was it?

it was a fully laden cobra mark III and it was immediately almost out of the space station,

one viper fried me effectively- there was no time to run out of energy i dont imagine

but i shall repeat the experiment and report back

How do you turn on your cloaking device, because I don't really do anything with mine because I don't know how to use it. :?

"O". There's a PDF in the main Oolite folder that has keys.

The trick is to turn it on when missiles have a go for ya..

for optimum performance you would also need the Naval Energy Unit

That is because you use a normal ship. Some oxp's contain uberships that have such a high recharge rate that you really can leave it on. But in my opinion it takes the challenge away using such ships.

am getting used to it now- just short bursts is well enough

i do notice tho, that kills i make with it on, dont register as kills?

Kills you make cloaked not counting is deliberate. You also don't get a fugitive tag if you shoot police ships cloaked. The cloak prevents detection of the kill as to GalCop can't see you making it, so the kill isn't logged to you either for your legal staus or your elite rating.

In other words: it is just a feature in order to balance the unfair advantage you get from cloaking. You are invisible (and therefore practically unkillable), but your own kills don't count. That's it.
