Oolite Bulletins

I was wondering why, given that we have over 1700 members now, my 2500+ posts make up such a big %age of the total number of posts. But as we seem to have 580+ members who have never made a posting then it all starts to become clear.

They can't all be shy lurkers can they?

Sounds pretty typical for any forum membership to me.

Many may be players not necessarily makers. Generally most people who say hello are looking for feed back on an oxp or fighting some god awful code, model, plist, mission problem.

I second that, CA. I'm a Pilot: I just fly 'em.

This Forum has been very useful to me, as it has to many others, I'm sure, who maybe only read and do not post.

I'm clearly not a member of enough forums to make that assumption

But since you can read without joining why join, if you have no intention of making a post (some of our zero posters have been members since 2004)

You should better check how many zero posters logged in within the last 6 months. I guess, there are many abandoned registrations.

One reason I join some forums is because that way, the new posts will be highlighted for me when I log in.. making it much easier to follow the active threads.. it saves a lot of time.. I daresay it is the same for most forum lurkers.. (come to think of it.. that was the sole reason I originally joined this forum.. but then I learned it was such a fun place to hang out..)

Well, to remember the original you do have to be of "aherm" a certain age.

To be honest there are thousands of places to pick fights with 12 year olds if that gets your 30 something juices flowing. I find as I mellow, (only slightly mind you, I can still kick ass) that the simple pleasure of like mindedness and shared creativity are worth their weight in gold.

Sure we have our own projects, we all do . but nothing builds enthusiasm like shared nostalgia. Elite/oolite has a fan base, from there creativity grows. That's a difficult thing to whip up around any original project (and if you do it kind of feels egocentric in an odd kind of way) Oolite defers that beautifully.

Although some day I must return to the audio drama boards, I am not relishing it. There is a euphoric focused creativity here that is very difficult to find on many boards. Or more generally on the internet as a whole.

If I wanted to have it out with 12 year olds, I wouldn't bother with Oolite. I'd go to a MMO like Warcrack or EVE instead and damn my soul forever.

The last young Boyracer that got under my hide was Wackyman. Seems he disappeared. Oh well. Maybe he'll return when he gains some maturity.

unfortunately sometimes the subject matter appears to define the form of the forum. Voice acting = actors. Yeah, great.

Although disruption inevitably arrives to test the metal of even the most tranquil backwater of the internet. Fortunately due to dry whit, parody and creeping cancer of sarcasm, many who crash land here, quickly move off in search of more dramatic, reactionary and bait-able vistas.

Going back to the original post, I also would assume that many of those who haven't logged in basically since registering are actually spambots. Perhaps some day some people will have another go through the member list and eliminate anybody who has never posted anything and hasn't logged in for the last let's say two years. But on the other hand side, as those "dead" accounts don't actually do anything (especially nothing bad or ugly), why bother?
