Details of converting ship.obj to ship.dat using python 2.6

Post by parazaine »

First, let me iterate - I am NOT a programmer and have only a basic understanding from reading various posts etc about converting files for use in oolite. I have successfully used Wings 3d to create my own ship type 'The Copperhead' and would like to take the next logical step of using my design in Oolite. I have downloaded Dosbox 0.70 (I have vista os) and python 2.6 and the conversion programs obj2dat.py and dat2obj.py etc but cant figure out the next step even from reading the various posts available - all my attempts to use DOS to run the python progs have met with dismal failure - could someone explain, in detail, how to run the python scripts? to convert my model data into oolite usable data? I thank you in advance for your patience and ,hopefully, help

Python should not be used from DOS (not even mentioning dosbox) but from cmd.exe
I'm aware of cygwin, but that is too much for simple operations you seek.

From the few times I've used Vista - if you type 'cmd' in the search function of the Vista Start Bar its vaguely clever enough to work out that you want to start a command window (which looks just like a DOS window oddly enough)

:? :? :?

OK - it looks like I double posted (or even treble posted now!) but there was definitely a post from parazaine between my two posts above...

Either that, or I've completely lost the plot!

OK, this is a test if I take the properties of your image (where I can see only red dots) and paste the location directly into a new tab of FF I can see your image. Very strange...

So what happens if I post it here:

Success I can see it!

 :?

:? :? :? And now I can see the image I've just pasted into my post above, in parazaine's post further up (but only that one!?!)

OK, I give up, it's late and I clearly need some sleep, I have lost the ability to drive my computer!

Back to my original question - have now tried to use cmd.exe to use python, seems to be working but keeps telling me the dir for obj2dat.py doesnt exist? where do i put the relevant files? and whats the exact syntax/format i should be typing? As mentioned in one of the forums, a simple to use 3d model/texture conversion to oolite data program would be v v useful for technophobes like myself
