The final frontier

After watching two episodes of Star Trek on Sci Fi this evening I thought would it be possible to have a new galaxy in Oolite where you have to go and explore the worlds. So you really have to fly to a system and chart it. I don't know if it's possible. I assume not. But the idea is that you fly to a planet. You then have to scan the system (fly within a certain range). Then F7 data is generated. Basically this is system/plist generation on the fly.

I assume this is not possible a.t.m but maybe in the future?

Yep but therefore it is a suggestion box

You can suggest it - but you won't get it?

Maybe a 'new' wormhole to a ninth galaxy/chart ?

Space is 3D of course, which doesn't match with the idea of a 2D chart, but even a 2D chart has four edges... and as we know, space doesn't stop at the edge of a map...

I like the idea. Maybe forum contributors could each submit a planet in secret until a new chart was populated, and then we could all enjoy exploring what has been created....

Cheers,

Drew.

Another_Commander suggested extending the original Oolite Ooniverse some time ago using the same pseudo-random structure that the original game used to create its universe some time ago.

I would think this an awesome idea.

Perhaps really something to explore - worlds secretly player-created as suggested by drew, corporate systems TL1 and anarchies TL 15, new aliens (Plants, Slugs, etc.?), thargoid systems or even regions of space (where you have to fight but can also reap unknown riches & easter eggs), worlds without population/ships/stations but perhaps open for mining or exploration missions etc.

And why not infinite worlds like this, also randomly generated? There would be something new forever!

I found it!!!

A_C's potentially splendid, potentially diluting, double-edged sword...

I like it, but with the caveat that it shouldnt mess up any of the existing dynamics, such as being able to get back to G1. It also shouldnt be too easy to get to, or the whole I am the first adventurer idea is a bit silly.

It should also feel different, with no (or very few) normal ships. It doesnt make sense to meet your friends on your trip to "explore new worlds" And with no stations, or at least no normal GalCorp stations, it will be high risk -- nowhere to dock to save or get repairs, nor to buy fuel, and presumably scary natives/thargoids/something so that it isnt just one enourmous nothing.

I would guess thargoid space is the best bet. There are already suitable ships and storyline that can be fitted. And the possibility of either Navy incursions and military stations dotted about as staging posts to save and repair, and to report back if its made a series of missions, it might be doable in a cool way.

Perhaps an add-on to the Galactic Hyperdrive, to even get there? A mission, when of Deadly or even Elite rank, to acquire this special GH add-on? And also have a purpose to go where very few went before?

Very few ships, all other explorers/naval mission people, and there could also be many ships that do not occur in "normal" space either - thargoid hives, unknown alien species, hyperdrive-fitted generation ships, INRA carriers etc.

Perhaps stations few and far between that have to be discovered, but I'd say stations you can save on nevertheless. Perhaps not only naval ones, but also unknown but not hostile species, renegades trying to create a new live for themselves out in the great unknown, scientific explorers where you can dock, refuel and save game - but perhaps only in every fifth system or somesuch, and you have to find them first.
it might be doable in a cool way.
For sure :D

I´d say regarding the save issue, save on all stations, It cannot be that hard to do something similar as I did with save anywhere OXP(where I recreated the vicinity of the saved station). To recreate the entire system..

I'd even be so bold and state, that a system wide recreate on load commander is the correct way to load a save game, given the fact that ships do not spawn randomly as in classical elite. But maintain a dynamic behaviour even when the player is docked...

So when the problem of the player having saved at an OXP station, and not having that station in his OXP folder anymore.. just move the player to the main station.

I realise that the Savegames will become huge, when compared to the current sizes, It will slowdown loading times. I suggest a hack / bypass of the current spawning routine, when a game has been loaded...

But I know, Not going to happen

Unless I download the source and do it myself

On potential caveat...

It would likely require recoding of all the "Look and Feel" OXP's... Could you imagine making the harrowing journey to a new system, never before encountered by GalCop society... And finding a Mall-Wart ConStore in orbit? Talk about a mood-killer :(

I second this. And, I would absolutely bet, a lot of other players would second this, too.

This would imo make much more sense than the current state of affairs, that it is as it is is a relic of the technological restrictions of computers of the 1980s with 64kB memory, and nothing more.

Not quite true. It is now a relic of a codebase built in that way. Sure if we were building oolite from new, we would want to handle it differently, but it is not so simple as to say there is no reason to maintain the status quo :P

Ups, now that's a different ballgame - one with lots of work and potentially shiny new bugs involved I guess.

I just thought that Frame had offered to do this work - if he could and would do it, would that be an option?
