Announcement: Wormhole Scanner

Mössbauer-Krantz Works is proud to announce the imminent release of our first mass-market product, the Wormhole Scanner.

Using the latest in sensory equipment, the WS is able to analyze the residual energy radiating out from 'wormhole clouds' and, in combination with your in-ship systems, calculates the projected destination system and estimated arrival times which are then displayed on your HUD.

This is must-have equipment for the discerning bounty-hunter, enabling tracking of criminals across the galaxies. Alternatively the budget-conscious trader can utilize this technology to save precious Quirium fuel by 'piggy-backing' onto another traders' hyperspace jump.

The Wormhole Scanner will be available soon in all high-tech systems across the 8 galaxies. Pre-book your installation at your favourite reputable Spaceship Outfitters now! We look forward to your custom. (Price and availability TBA)

Following are some extracts from scientific footage taken during our V1.73 test-flights. Please note that final specifications are subject to change.

You have not been told the best of it yet: The wormholes are now fully monitored by the game and the ones that have been scanned and have ships in transit are stored in your save file. So, you can scan a Griff Boa exiting the system, then dock, exit the game and come back after a couple of days. You can travel to that system and, if you arrive ahead of the Boa you had scanned two days earlier, you will see that very same Boa entering the system at the arrival time predicted by the Wormhole Scanner.

Ambush missions are now (well, will be soon) a very realistic option in Oolite.

Will the present me be able to warn a future me that I'm about to ambushed by past me?

If I eat my Shreddies will my ship fly faster?

:P

(just a suggestion) I would personally prefer a

"Travel time: 7 Hours"

in addition to an ETA: 343q4b 3q5b3q4bvqv because subtracting that time from the current time sucks for me XD This is mainly to facilitate trading missions where I have to get to a certain place within a certain time (and then I would prefer to know how long rather than when I reach, which is not the case for ambush missions)

but Still, love it!

Wow! :D

Already saw it on my (as yet unplayable :( ) trunk build - but this sounds even better than I thought, especially with A_C's remarks thrown in.

Right On, Dev(s)! 8)

Unplayable because...? Are you also suffering from this "BANG, you're dead!" bug appearing on almost every flight, or is it something else?

Last try was four days ago, have not been updating my trunk since.

The game crashed to desktop every time, somewhere between just looking at the savegames screen and my first hyperjump.

The log had many things to say, lots of complaints about lots of oxps, but the determining factor seemed to be this sort of error ...
[ship.escortSetup.wtf]: Pending escort count for <ShipEntity 0xd8762e8>{"Deep Space Dredger Hauler" ID: 233 position: (683.047, 455.365, 3642.92) scanClass: CLASS_NO_DRAW status: STATUS_COCKPIT_DISPLAY} is 8, expected 0. This is an internal error, please report it.
... repeated over and over again, with different ships, and as already mentioned, in different very early stages of the game.

It especially seemed to hate the Dredger, though.

:(

 8)  8)

This was one of the few decent features in Frontier - it is a welcome addition to Oolite.

Fantastic.

Well done to all involved.

Does the scanner know about misjump wormholes, or galactic wormholes (can NPCs create either of them? will they be able to in future?)

Are there any funny issues with wormholes generated in witchspace?
