We must be spoiled with broadband internet connections here in The Netherlands then. I have 10Mbit at home.

Here in the UK, I have resisted Virgin upgrading my Broadband from 2Mbit (it used to be 300Kbit, then 1Mbit) now they're forcing me to go to 10Mbit but for an additional charge of £2 on top of the £10 I already pay - I think I can live with that.

Having just returned from South Africa their Internet Infrastructure is a joke (monopoly controlled) - even the University I was at had only a 1Mbit pipe to the rest of the world - sharing that with everybody else meant I often got less than dial-up speeds to the www.

I have a 10MB connection with Virgin Media, but I'm waiting for the 50MB connection to be connected in our area. Although my parents often go on about the super-speed internet they get in Tokyo... I wonder how long before we can get 1GB connections? (Although I think my parents only have 100MB connection... that's still fast!)

Wow, these Famous Planet expansions only get better and better. Good stuff pagroove!

Thank you Pleb87,

About the speeds.I looked it up. Here in Rotterdam (The Netherlands) they offer up to 120MBit . The 120Mbit is 80 euro's a month.

Well, at my speed it took about 5 minutes to upload Famous Planets 2.

I remember in 1999 I was student at the Journalism Academy. In the Library was 1 computer shared by about 1200 students. If you wanted to look something up you had to sign in on a waiting list. They thought the Internet was not a serious contender as a news source then. Well look nowadays

Singapore is putting in a 1Gbit link for every house!!! Some of our students have gone back there and their Uni is one of the first to be hooked up...

I suspect it will be a looooong time before we get 1GB although 1Gb is common in several parts of the world now...

Cool! I'm a little envious :) So if you've got 1GB download, what's your upload speed like?

It's Gb, not GB  and funnily enough, upload speeds are crap. It appears we sacrificed upload speeds for download speeds D:

 Got caught out by my own correction snipe! That'll teach me!

I asked Virgin Media (or Vermin Mediocre as they're sometimes known over here) that I'd rather have 5Mbit d/l and 1Mbit u/l rather than 10Mbit d/l and 512Kbit u/l - but apparently I'm in the minority.

Hehe....file sharing would be done even more massively with such upload speeds ;)

However, I don't see the use of such high download speeds. Most web pages cap the download between 1-2 Megabyte per second anyway.

<Sigh> I relinquished my 2Mbit Virgin BB connection when I moved house - I now have BT broadband whose connection speed is optimistically described as "up to 8Mbit".

But the actual speed depends on your proximity to the telephone exchange. Which means that I get about 1.8Mbit.

For 16 quid per month.

main use of such download speeds is for mass downloaders. Each page caps it at 2 megabytes, but having a higher speed means you can run more of such pages at their cap.
