After accidentally buying and using the escape pod and then being rescued by a Navy Constitution class ship. Luckily (for me) I didn't immediately load up previous game save, and had a look at what the navy was selling.
My Cobra MKIII now has:
Large Cargo Bay *
ECM *
Fuel Scoops *
Escape Pod
Energy Bomb
Naval Energy Unit
Docking Computers
Galactic Hyperdrive
Cloaking Device
Witchdrive Fuel Injectors *
Scanner Targeting Enhancement
Multi-Targeting System
Advanced Space Compass
Advanced Navigational Array
Target System Memeory Expansion
Shield Boosters *
Military Shield Enhancemant
External Heat Shielding
Forward Military Laser *
(* this was what I originally had, along with a regular energy unit - I was saving for a SuperCobra)
...most of which was purchased at half-price!

Get yourself Mili-lasers on the Aft and side facings and, yup, that'd be about it.

I suppose I could, but I would never use them.
I got to ELITE status several times on my old BBC B, Master and Archimedes with nothing more than LCB, ECM, Energy Unit and mili-laser.

Worth fitting a Mil on the Aft - you can shoot while making a strategic withdrawal while your front Mil cools down...

+1
Oolite's mil laser has some differences from Elite's mil laser.
It runs hotter and has a much shorter time to reach cutoff temperature. Because of this, learn to precision aim and burst-fire, mount an aft as well as fore, and don't be stingy or cheap with missile ordinance.
Either Oolite's mil laser is weaker, or Oolite's ships are stronger. Either way, it takes more than a short burst to kill your average pirate fighter.

Iron Ass = what you need if you want to sit on a cactus.
But no. A real Iron ass is a fully pimped Imperial Courier.
I prefer to mount left and right mining lasers, not mil lasers - who really uses l/r mil lasers?

Lookin' good.
Add some ECM-Hardened missiles and a Q-Bomb along with beam or military lasers to port, aft and starboard.

I have a starboard mounted mining laser, all others are military.

Left and Right mil-lasers are just what the doctor ordered to destroy Thargoid Carriers.
Approach firing the front laser. Yaw and use a side one. Spin and use the other.
Bang! Bank 2000 Cr.
In the meantime the front and rear are cooling down for the next wave of attackers.

Side Mil's do make much more sense now that Yaw is implemented - I remember on my days on C64 Elite spinning my joystick round so that I had up/down spin left/right irrespective of which viewport I was using.

'Iron Ass' isn't only a question of your equipment. Therefore I'd like to give another spin to the original question, and answer it with another question:
How many enemies (pirates, thargoids, renegades or stolen military ships, whatever) can you take on and eradicate without breaking into sweat (or: without having any of your shields depleted into the red zone)? I appreciate your 'Iron Ass' if the answer is 5 or above, and there is at least one of the hard ships (renegades or military) among them. (And, of course, staying cloaked is not allowed; your killcount has to reflect the battle.)

Sometimes you just have enormous luck. Currently I am busy re-scripting the AI of the pirate Leviathan and its defenders. It will be more difficult after having killed more than 100 of the military ships. But I noticed when you encounter the leviathan in a "slow" system with a low frame rate, the defenders have a lot of troubles to start shooting at you.
I killed a leviathan with about 8 military pirated around me in attack mode while none of the ships took a single shot at me. Probably that didn't count as iron ass? This is not possible with higher frame rates: Than it will be pure suicide.
