Is there a letter on the scanner for my current mission objective???

OXP or otherwise...

At the moment I am unable to find a few things in different systems and am getting a little bit frustrated...

If you're attemping the Taranis mission a 'K' will appear when you toggle the advanced space compass modes. Do this before docking though.

I don't know about other missions though... quite new myself.

No, not generally. It depends on how your current mission is scripted. Some missions provide you with a scanner identification for the ship or station you have to find, some don't. It's purely on the respective mission author if he wants to give you that kind of hint or not.

The general rule is therefore to read and memorize all the important information you get on a mission screen carefully. If you are told during your briefing that you e.g. should go to the point opposite to the main station (meaning on the opposite side of the planet), then do this. If you are told to go to any other specific point in space, then do it. And good scripts will also sum up the relevant information in the short description string you get on your manifest screen (F5-F5).

If nothing at all is specified, but your objective is to encounter a ship, then the best guess is that it will either be close to the witchpoint in your target system, or somewhere on the space lane between witchpoint and planet. (Note: in some cases (e.g. Random Hits) your target will be on the imaginary line between witchpoint and station (not planet) instead.)

Good scripts will also tell you if your target is marked on your compass, and with which letter. Usually scripters will only do this if they think that it would be too difficult to find the target otherwise (for instance because the target is added at a random location).

That one is difficult as you only can find him shortly after entering the right system. After that it leaves the lane and becomes near impossible to find.

But when it was visible on the compass, the whole search would become a joke.

Searching for people is really hard, and I assume its supposed to be really hard, too, because it gives an idea of large distances.
