Rock Hermits

G'day Commanders,
Ever since I installed a rock hermit locator they have all migrated to the other side of the planet from the W point I enter the system. Is this normal? Or do they I know have a locator and they just want to avoid me? I know I'm out in space a lot, but bet I shower more often than they do!

As counter measure you should also install pirate_cove.oxp. Those "hermits" like the smell of a captain that hasn't left his chair for at least 24 hours. With this oxp more hermits come back to the normal lanes. 8)

My, what an old thread. But it spares me starting a new one. Just this evening, while dispatching a pirate with port side laser, I noticed the unmistakable presence of a Rock Hermit. For my hermitage, I have re-used the Salvage Gang model and textures from Anarchies OXP. It is huge and the tunnel transit is the best IMHO. Anyway, this Rock Hermit was definitely not located along the WP - planet route, nor was it between the sun and planet. I reviewed the release notes for 1.77 and 1.77.1 but found nothing about Rock Hermits being populated outside the normal system routes. Bug or not?

Since 1.77 (I think) there has been a pirate off-load hermit in some systems - they are often well away from the 'lanes.

I love it! How thoughtful of the devs to give pirates a place to sell their ill-gotten goods.

Yeah, ain't it just... and they can sometimes be found by following a fully-laden pirate.

How does one identify a fully-laden pirate? By their lack of interest in the player?

Yes, when the hold is full, a pirate switches to a traderAI and behaves like any other trader in respect to its interest in the player.

And traders with bounty – including the fully-laden pirates – nowadays don't travel to the main station, but to the closest station when I remember right.

Feed one a holdful of food containers, as I have done before now.

This is one of the best characteristics of Oolite: You always discover new things in the game. Always.

I think I prefer feeding the ducks in the park though... 'Here pirate, pirate, pirate... eat the food' isn't as appealing as force feeding them more laser than they can handle.

I am sure that any hungry pirate can save themselves in an escape capsule and then I'll help them enjoy some Galcop porridge while I cash in the bounty chit! ::shrugs::

 An even better method would be to use Cody's tactics and then once you have followed the pirate and made sure you are going to a Rock Hermit, you "encourage" the pirate to use his/her/it's escape capsule, scoop it up and any other booty you have room for then dock with the hermit (hey, the pirate was going there anyway) and well... profit.
