It's green and it kills things?

Sorry, can't really help!

Cheers,

It's an invisible beam, self-targetting weapon but unfortunately it doesn't actually work when fitted on one of your puny human ships

It's just another bug of Realistic Shipyards. Please, ignore it. And as Thargoid already said: It won't work on your ship anyway.

Yeah, but an obsessed collector would be willing to pay big Cr's for one.

Yep, and a known one at that, and fixed for the upcoming successor of RS.

And really don`t buy it: If you try to look out the window where this laser is installed or try to open your status (F5) or missions (F5-F5) screen, your game will probably crash.

Aegidian put the Thargoid Laser in, and RS switched its TL to a number where it might become buyable under certain conditions which shall not be named (spoiled). Next version, the Thargoid Laser`s TL will again be 99 (unreachable).

That would be some sick obsession. He first would have to sacrifice one of his ship's weapons, and second would risk nasty crashes (as per Lestradaes post above here).

I played with it for a while a few months back (to see if there was anything salvagable with it) and it doesn't crash things, or at least didn't back then.

You just get a "no weapon" cross-hairs (iirc), and it fires like a normal laser would in terms of heat-up and sound. Just no beams appear, and it doesn't do any damage to anything.

That`s interesting - it did what I described in my game.

Thargoid, could you open the F5 status screen, and if yes, was the Thargoid Laser listed there?

And, which OS are you on again?

WinXP.

This was under 1.71.2 (I'll try it again under 1.72 when I get time).

It shows up as "Thargoid Laser(n/a)" or something like that (the n/a I guess is part of the problems with it). Give me a little while and I'll repeat the test and see what I get and report back.

Please do :)

If the Laser could be made to work as intended somehow, I`d have uses for it

Cheers

Just retried it quickly on 1.71.2 under WinXP.

Lists on the equipment screen (F5) as "Aft (nil)" (having purchased an aft TL). On the view screen it's the simple straight line 4-part cross-hair (like a pulse laser iirc). Gives laser temp and sound when fired, but nothing else.

Doesn't crash anything though, at least for me. Will test it on 1.72 later on.

I had more or less the same experience as Thargoid. Which still means you can't make it work.

A turreted laser isn't meant to work on the player ship.

And could we please bury this thread at this point?

Well, doesn`t work is doesn`t work. Perhaps it would work as a player ship`s turret ... but that doesn`t make a lot of in-game sense.

So bury it it will have to be :(
