Rank/kills question

Hi,

It's been so long since I played Elite, not even sure what machine I played it on but it's nice to revisit a classic.

If memory serves me right the original only had the named rank level info and not a score as well so I don't know how that works and if any changes have been made to that system in Oolite.

I thought the number in brackets after the rank was kills but after killing a ship it jumped from 2 to 262, are there different scores given for different kills or is this a bug?

There is a mission that, after killing a certain ship, you gain 256 kills and a shed load of cash. Where were you and what missions (OXP or native) do you have running?

This was not long after starting the game with the 1.71.2 test version and the Realistic shipyards and recommended extras (Assasins, Blitzspear clan, Commies, Hotrods 0.52c, Ionics-1.2.1, Oo-haul and Vector 1.00).

It happened twice. The first time I went up to Reorte and traded my ship in for a ringhals which I duly added a mil laser, extended cargo bay, ECM, extra energy unit, fuel injectors and multi target system to before going to Diso or Leesti for a docking comp. I didn't know that you can't upgrade the shields on that ship and thought maybe I just needed to find a higher tech planet to be able to.

I cant remember the name of the planet I went to but it was not that far down from the Diso/Leesti area and was a t14 planet. I figured the ship must have limits when I still couldn't get a shield booster there (which was comfirmed by looking at the ships list that came with the realistic shipyards) so I got a enhanced target scanner and went about making my way back up to Diso and Leesti. On my way back up there I jumped from something like 3 to 263 and my rank went up to competant after a battle, the navy messaged me to say hello when I docked.

All hell broke loose after that and as I left the station I got a message from the Krait gang or something, they quickly killed me even though there was police all around the place. I reloaded and again they attacked just outside the station, this time I managed to evade as the police killed them. I jumped to the next system which was probably Orerve and as I exited hyperspace I got a message from the Tiger gang or something like that. I managed to kill a couple of them before I found myself with just a flight stick in my hand and no ship around me. I decided that I was not yet up to the standard to take the likes of these groups on and restarted.

After restarting I again went up to Reorte and traded for a Ringhals which I beefed up as best as possible. I am pretty sure that I went to Diso for a docking comp after that and in that system I fought two ships then one more a little later before docking. On docking I again got a message from the navy so I checked my score and it was in the region of 262 and competant. I went back to the save and this time I avoided the battles and have kept doing that since for now.

Comp is running win xp home edition service pack 3 on a AMD 2500+ single core with 1.5 gig of DDR 800 mem and a nvidia 6600 GT gfx card with the latest drivers.

Realistic shipyards is adding special mission ships that give you those points. (and prevents you from getting that oolite internal mission later on).

So let's just say that a bug gave you these kills. (Which also means that, as long as you don't apply the bug-fix yourself and start a new game, playing without Realistic Shipyards will give you a much more realistic gameplay.)

Oh, and by the way: Hi, wenlock, and welcome to the boards and of course to this great game! :D

Oh damn, it`s the Realistic Shipyards game breaking bug again :(

Dear wenlock, kindly have a look here:

https://bb.oolite.space/viewtopic.php?t=5140

Sorry you had to find that bug ... the thread linked above tells you how to remove that problem.

PS: People, if someone encounters that bug, there is a thread (linked above) in the Expansions Forum, which explains of how-to avoid it and remove the danger of it appearing. It would be ever so helpful if you could point to this thread if someone asks? Thanks :(

@Lestrade. You really do need to fix this one though and upload a fixed version to the wikki. Either just remove the constrictor clone or do a full C&P (no like-shiping as this copies the death_actions), rename re-role and take out the clone's death_actions.

Every player who installs RS will hit it sooner or later. And without the knowhow to edit their save files to reset the Constrictor mission and remove the extra kills, its a real game breaker as it not only awards extra kills but messes up one of the Elite Classic Missions. Players who don't know how to fix it will have to start a new Commander. You can't really count on people looking on the boards, as a lot of players don't vist. I know from my own OXPs that many have been downloaded over 4,000 times, so there's a lot more people playing than posting! :)

You`re absolutely correct, which is why I did just that about ten minutes before your posting :)

Correct, too. The last two RS versions were downloaded 650 times (RS 3.01) and 1350 times (RS 3.02) over the course of three and a half months each - in the latter case, that`s nearly as much people as are registered on the forums!

I hope that this was the last serious bug from my beginner`s mistakes

I was just about to see if there was info in a sticky thread on how to edit (never done anything like that before) and then I noticed you have made a patched version available which I have promptly downloaded and installed.

Many thanks, well to all of you who replied actually. :D

Master, does if I were to download the realistic shipyards oxp now, would the game breaking bug be fixed? If not, I think you might want to do that, master. Also, I had to remove RL to run assassins smoothly (not like it still runs smoothly with out it.) Now, It's coke time!

Don't Panic: FSOneblin

EDIT: I read this before I read about RSB. Oops. Well, I will just use farce chock (Choking on door hold openers) On some admiral and say it was his fault.

Should be fine to just switch to the new version of RS, as long as you'd completed the Constrictor mission anyways there no harm done. The game generally should run normally with Assassins installed, but you will get a massive hit (I'm talking 30 second hang on exiting witchspace) when you enter certain systems where one of the Big missions in assassins is taking place. It should only be at a couple of G7 systems (and only when your actually doing the mission though). The set-piece battles have 200+ ships involved and its just the shear number of ships being added that takes its toll! Probabley best to play these ones with only a few other OXPs installed and put them back in when your done.

Ok, thanks. Now I just need to make sure the investigator "falls in battle" (any tips for me to get him to hold still?)

Yes, in V3.02b, online already, this bug is completely fixed. So I would definitely recommend to re-download the new version, even if the mission is already over for you.

Young Padawan, strong have you been growing in the farce. You now only need to find a fitting door hold opener to make the admiral of your choice chock on, via farce.

And then - hahahahahaaaaa

But we won`t tell them that.

Over and out.

Sounds like the planet Onrira to me - it's supposed to be a nice quiet backwater! What have you done to it Lestradae?

Cheers,

Drew.

Well, if I told you a secret, I`d say that a lot of new ships are amassing at the system of Facece, built en masse by its Tech Level 16 shipyards, until a certain day in perhaps summer 2009 3139, when they are going on a q-bomb run to Achenar ... but some of those ships are already getting out there, onto the black market. Have you noticed all those new, unusual ships, that were not there just 20 years ago?

But I`m not telling.

I`m also not telling you about the Mykoid Warhead and the Galactic Gateway Stuck State Device of the Project Manhattan II on said Facece equipment docks, presumably undertaken by one young Padawan FSOneblin for unknown purposes.

Those are also not teasers for the Realistic Shipyards successor, upcoming in a year or so, perhaps even less.

Just throwing around ideas, me.

May the farce be with you
