So...I just yesterday discovered Oolite. Very interesting game...I like elite-like games ever since I got Frontier:FE. But...well, I'd like to ask a few lil questions:)

Is AI always so suicidal? Half of my fights actually ended by opponent ramming me head-on. In fact, so far I've seen only two tactics used by AI. Head-on passes and sometimes missile.
Next questions are related to extensions. I don't have time to go through all, so is there any decent, balanced, preferably with ships from F:FE? (I want my Argent's Quest T.T)
And...an I use my savegame after installing it?

And something I miss....top/bottom view. Also...maybe targetting boxes? Sometimes I barely know where enemy is because he's too dark and I see only engines...and, maybe ILS to help me docking, when I can't afford autopilot? I still crash too often...

And by the way...I'm running on Ubuntu 8.04 now and got a little problem, so far noone was able to help me with it...I have ati radeon 9600, ati X.Org drivers...and when playing most 3D games, including Oolite, the game window (or whole screen when running fullscreen) is little (eh...now how to say it in english...blinking? might be it), just about every second (more frequently in some games) the screen goes black for a VERY brief moment...maybe ti's like one frame per second...it really doesn't matter much at Oolite since most of screen is usually black :) but gets annoying at some other games...can someone here help me with it?

(Sorry, couldn'ลง write this in previous post, something about not allowing urls in posts when I have 0...weird cause there is no url...)

What version Oolite are you running? If you are running the ubuntu repository version then you have 1.65, and I would suggest that you d\l and build the latest stable test version from here, 1.71.2. Many oxp's only run with the later versions of Oolite. There is an external views oxp for 1.65 but it is not needed with later versions as it is built in.

There are pieces of equipment you can buy to help with targeting just as with docking, but all these can be expensive for a new commander. Once you can afford a docking computer you probably wont need it, docking does get easier with practice, just remember to start from the nav buoy and line up on the docking slot before starting your approach then you only need to worry about roll.

Cant help you with the video problem, sorry.

As for which oxp's, I think Realisc Shipyards is a good start, plus the required other oxp's as listed in the readme and wiki entry. There are several issues withfilenames having the wrong case, doesn't make any difference for none linux users but there are lots of things that linux doesn't like. If you want to install RS then I can give you a list of things you need to edit to get everything working OK.

Well...I'm kinda new to Linux (I had to use it after I found out, when reinstalling OS, that my old WinXP cd is damaged beyond repair) so, I totally dunno what to do with that package...

ILS is I think just what new players need to get a little practise in docking. It should be cheap, like 100 cr...
I might take a look at RS, but I'll be away from tommorrow till friday. So, maybe someone can use that time to write a few tips for me :)

Oh...and as I play, a few more ideas sprung into my mind...first, time compression...might come handy when meeting a neutral ships/approach to space station...just all those times when you just have to sit and wait.

I realize there's just a low possibility of anyone helping me with my graphics. Linux is having problems with ATI, that's well known thing. Some drivers might help solve it, but so far only drivers I found were those X.Org....

I'm sure the early PC version of Elite I played used to have a 50Cr "Pilot fee" that would let you autodock - as long as you had a "spare" 50Cr to begin with!

Maybe this could be added as an OXP... darn, have I just gotten myself a job

Well, after playing Oolite for a few hours, my docking improved enough so I don't need any help with it now...

Still, a few questions remain: when converting to 1.71 and using OXPs will my savegame be kept?

And, how to build game from package? I'm still new to Linux....

Well, I'm leaving now, hoping for this being answered when I get back.

Version update & save files - I believe so yes. Although it's best to uninstall the old before you re-install the new, so you may need to copy the file somewhere safe and then put it back into the new install afterwards. Or in any case you may need to move your saved game, depending on how you go about the installation.

And for builds, this thread or this wiki page may help you.

meee bee stuupid :)

I always thought that getting the game from .package is via some command or external appilication. Never thought that it can be run like any other installer, just it was not marked as executable.

Anyway, proceeding to get RS now. Gonna REALLY read manual this time :)

Edit: AWW...can't download download one of OXPs required, Amen Brick's Pirate Clan One: The Blitzspears. It si hosted at uploading.com, and when I click download button I get "address not found" error. So...could someone who has this OXP upload it somewhere else so I can download?
