Arbitrary 'offender' status drives me mad!

I was trying to witchspace to another system when there was a disruption and I found myself in the middle of the mother of all battles.

It was fantastic. I've never seen so many ships on my scanner at the same time - traders, pirates, GalCops, Galactic Navy and Thargoid Battleships. I tried to inflict damage on the Thargoids, but they were tough old hulks - I think their demise had more to do with the Behemoth and Navy ships than my overheated laser.

I rolled my ship and powered up my engines just as some dimwit in an Adder flew past my nose. The result? Instant 'offender' status. My assistance during the Thargoid battle counted for nothing as the Galactic Navy used me for target practice. BANG! BANG! BANG! I was desperately trying to select and activate the extra fuel tank that I happened to have on a missile pylon. Then I activated the witchdrive, but there was a 15 second wait... BANG! BANG! The witchspace fuel burners bought me just enough time for the witchdrive to get me to another system....

....but I'm still pissed off about that 'offender' status. :x Does anybody else sympathise? Has anyone else been harshly punished for something that wasn't your fault?

I assisted some galcops with a fugitive. They politely thanked me and then shot me to death when I collided with the victim who we were all helping by blasting the fugitive. I was quite put out by it all. I had no chance to do anything, the collision wasted my shields.

The fugitive died, the victim died, and the vigilante died!

Those GalCops have no sympathy at all.... :(

Thats the CJU for you!

One Huntingdon Jury finds your client NG in 20 mins of biting his wife, despite bite wounds on said wife. The next week a same randomly selected jury finds your fantastist homeless client G of poss / w intent on the basis of his made up deal lists. You roll the dice and take your chance!

Harr, harr. The 'Friendly Fire Medal' for JohnnyBoy! Maybe they should then say: 'Thank you for ripping my -censored-, Mr. Niceguy. Here is another piece of me to shoot at.'

BTW: I think this or similiar things happened to most of us. Make some more jumps and your status will change (to Fugitive if I get this all right, hehe).

There's always the escape capsule!
You clean up your reputation but lose your cargo!

I used to use the esc capsule quite a lot playing classic elite, but very very rarely now, with fuel injectors and the like. Shame really, it was quite an adrenilin pumper.

Something similar happened me last week.

I hears a distress call from a "Man O' War" ship. It was a trader with two box-escorts. By the time I arrived the outer hulls of the "Man O' War" were already destroyed and I noticed the attacker was a Hydra. I also noticed the "Man O' War" got already help from a viper.

But knowing the strength of a Hydra, I decided to help in this battle. I went for the back of the Hydra. I lined perfectly up to heat up his tail. At the same time the two box-escorts did the same. They fired also at the Hydras tail but somehow they never noticed I was blocking their view. (Don't they have eyes in their head?)

Result was that they blow away my shields and I decided to attack the Hydra from an other angle. When we at last god rid of the Hydra I received another distress message from the "Man O' War". This time I saw the police attack the "Man O' War".

This time the police was my best friend as this must have been a reaction of the "Man O' War's" escorts heating up my tail. GalCop didn't bother about the escorts but went immediately for their boss!

Wait for the next Localhero version. Then you can use it more often again :-)

Or install Anarchies. Then it works no more.

I managed to get to Offender quite interestingly too - flying towards a planet with a Viper around when a lone-wolf pirate came up dead ahead.

Within laser range his radar image suddenly turned red, so of course I blasted him before he could do me in (not being quite iron-ass yet). Collected the bounty, and then suddenly the GalCop Viper decided that -I- was the bad guy and started to 'investigate'. Sure enough, checking my status, I was now an 'Offender'. What gives? The pirate hadn't actually shot at me before I fired my first shot, but surely the radar going red on me counts as a weapons-lock on me with imminent aggression, no?

Furthermore, considering they paid me out the bounty, GalCop must have been aware that he was a wanted criminal and not just a trader with a chequered trading history..

apparently, every criminal is marked red on radar...doesn't have to be a pirate.Because it happened to me too that a ship turned red, but did not shoot at me...at least not till I engaged it.

By the way, I got offender status once in very interesting way-accidentally pressed a instead of s when docking, thus firing at station.

Hmm - not my experience. I've had lots of 'Offenders' quite happily fly by me and stay yellow on the radar.

Ooops! That happens to me occasionally too - but luckily only with the ECM key rather than the lasers..

I might be wrong, but I think that another ship turns red on your scanner when it locks its missile guidance system onto you ('t' on the Oolite keyboard).

I've had ships turn red on my scanner, and when I've fired on them they've issued a distress call (e.g. "Help, we're under attack"). That's when the GalCops think that you're the aggressor....

I consider a missile lock to be a hostile action :D

Oh yes, Micha. So do I....
