Scanner problems

Post by tinker »

Not sure if this is a bug, a 'feature' of an OXP or a conflict between OXP's.

First oo all I noticed the stations were not displayed on the scanner, I am not sure when this happened as I usually navigate by the beacon until the station is in sight visually but recently I have noticed other problems that may be connected.

Quite often the scanner detects things incorrectly, the other day I was out cruising and there were several white objects on the scanner when alarms bell started - condition red and a swarm of hatching boy racers started attacking, they were the white objects and they stayed white. Targeting any of them showed their offender status but if I shot any of them then I became an offender. Yesterday I was trying to research just what does and does not work properly, or as expected. when I got a red scanner object, I targeted it and it was a space bar, well it wasn't a space bar it was a small ship named space bar, it was marked as an offender and was still red as I approached it but it did not attack. As I circled around it to see what it was exactly I accidentally bumped into it and got a bounty bonus.

I would appreciate ideas from anyone as to whether this is a bug or OXP problem, I suspect it is an OXP conflict.

I am running 1.71.2 64 bit on Linux with these OXP's -

Can you retry without Realistic Shipyards installed?

Was it called "A Seedy Space Bar"? This is a template (which should not every actually appear in game), the bars that are added are based on this one, but the template itself should not appear. There is a bug where Oolite occasionally adds the wrong object, (eg it should have added an asteroid but adds a ship or bit of a space bar instead).

I don`t think this kind of behaviour can have anything to do with Realistic Shipyards, at least not if he is using version 3.02.

I had a quick look at the boyracers in RS, there is nothing there that could create such an effect.
Targeting any of them showed their offender status but if I shot any of them then I became an offender.
The only way a boyracer could become an offender in RS 3.02 would be if it was a boyracer pirate - there`s a very low chance of this happening.

@tinker: Did the boyracers behave like pirates?

@another commander: What makes me sure, then, that it`s not RS is this:
Yesterday I was trying to research just what does and does not work properly, or as expected. when I got a red scanner object, I targeted it and it was a space bar, well it wasn't a space bar it was a small ship named space bar, it was marked as an offender and was still red as I approached it but it did not attack. As I circled around it to see what it was exactly I accidentally bumped into it and got a bounty bonus.
The space bars are part of Random Hits, as far as I know, the bar is not supposed to become a ship suddenly and this sounds as if the scanner colour, bounties, the attribution of shipdata to models and the roles had all gone haywire at the same time ... makes no sense.

If I can look into something, just tell me to I will, but I don`t think this has to do with RS or even an oxp conflict. If my reasoning above is wrong, please tell me how so.

@L. I don't think its a bug in RS or Random Hits as such, its that occasionaly Oolite gives a shipdata entry the wrong role. As Random Hits has about 200 shipdata entries in it (and RS must have about 2000 including all the sub-ents), having RS or RH installed may increase the fequency of the bug as these OXPs put in so many entries in shipdata that the odds of a misplacement go up.

@LittleBear: That does actually sound logical ... can we as oxp`ers do anything to avoid this kind of bug, then?

Trying things in order suggested

@another_commander
Removing Realistic Shipyards did not help, it was difficult to test properly as none of my savegames would load without it but a new Jameson went for a ride, Lave station did not show on scanner, the only ships I found signaled yellow and behaved "normally."

@LittleBear
The ship was just called Space bar, it looked like a 'normal' small ship not part of anything else and whilst it was red on the scanner it did not attack me in any way. It was either stationary or at least very slow moving.

@Lestradae
There were 3 or 4 of them attacking me, at least 2 were marked as offenders and all of them were flagged white on the scanner. I am not sure if they behaved like pirates, what do pirates behave like that is particular about pirates. Apart from preachers and frog rickshaws everyone else ignores me or attacks. I am usually to busy fighting back or running away to notice any specific tactics.
The space bars are part of Random Hits, as far as I know, the bar is not supposed to become a ship suddenly and this sounds as if the scanner colour, bounties, the attribution of shipdata to models and the roles had all gone haywire at the same time ... makes no sense.
I am not sure if all this started to fall apart at the same time or if some were borked and adding another OXP borked more things, I was aware of the lack of scanner id for stations before I noticed anything else, and many of the items are random in game so I would not notice until the event occured, and I may have ignored the event if I was busy with something else. Not a lot of help I know.

Would it perhaps be helpful if I went back to a vanilla version and added OXP's one by one? Though I am not sure how I can get random events, like boy racers or ships called space bars, to appear on demand.

Hm, tinker, I think the scripter wizards will have to sort this one out for you, for me it sounds as if something is broken in the core game (TM) of Oolite that you installed ...

One last desperate idea of mine (I have read about that sometimes does create problems) - could it be that you installed your Oolite version on top of an older Oolite version without deleting the old version first?

Sorry for not being able to be more helpful :(

@tinker: Can you please post the first 50 or so lines of your stderr.txt? Just in case there might be an enlightening error message there, you never know.

Also, your idea of adding OXPs one at a time is a good one. I recommend you give it a try.

@Lestradae
I did install 1.65 from the ubuntu repository, so that was in /usr. I built this version from source and it is in my /home so shouldn't (famous last words) affect this instance.

@another_commander
This is all the relevant output to stderr from the last startup. There is another anomaly though, since I removed and then replaced realistic shipyards stations now show correctly on the scanner though they did not show up with RS missing!

Well that is a mess...

those warnings you are getting from one or more of the OXPs, and i am not in particular fond of the missing textures either...

in comparison.. a stderr.txt file should like like this...
no warnings... and no errors... during startup

unless someone else can spot something... your only option is to remove the OXPs one at a time.. and hold down shift(i use left shift) when starting up oolite... and by hold down i mean hold down.. not only just press once, hold down until you see the start screen...

The only errors that are been reported in the stddrr is some command name problems in Local Hero.oxp. You could remove it, but I don't think that its an OXP problem. Items appearing wrongly has been reported by Eric Walch before and some others. Its not a bug I can reproduce on windows though. Sometime asteroids are spawned as cargo and even try to attack the player and somtimes subentries (including bits of space bars) float around in space. But isn't this an Oolite bug rather than an OXP bug, as it effects things from the unexpanded game (like asteroids) as well as stuff from OXPs?

I tried just removing one ant a time and was getting different errors with each removal. Decided it might be more constructive to start the other way around.

A vanilla install, no OXP's gave a clean stderr file. Added Realistic shipyards on its own and got these errors

Reading the RS read me there are 7 dependancies so I installed the 6 I have, Pirate Clan One is a problem as it does not seem to exist. The errors changed to

The missing textures now appear to be found but there are 2 new missing textures. Also note there is an element array: validity error which is a new error - presumably in one of the required OXP's for RS ??
Ahha found the missing pirate clan 1, it is amens Blitzspear which rather confusingly is AAACrooks.oxp Installed that and the stderr file is basically the same except that the engines file now appears to be found but there are 3 instances of not finding the cannon.png.

I can continue adding OXP's back in until I find the one causing the JavaScript errors but I am a bit concerned about the errors I have already.

The missing textures won't crash the game. It just means the ship won't appear. Its to do with windows being not being case sensitive. If you rename them .png rather than .PNG that should fix it. The typo in Realistic Ship yards shipdata entry means some of its ships will be broken.

not sure... during the writing of the rock hermit locator for 1.65 and 1.68, where i used buoys, Oolite sometimes picked the Rock hermit Beacon, and used that for as navigation beacon near the station... ofcourse it then had an R instead of an N as space compas letter...

That ofcourse was a role setting in the shipdata.plist... that i then removed.. i was then getting the hang of what roles did exactly...

But my point being, wrong roles can produce these odd bugs... i would much rather see a stderr.txt file where tinker has held down the shift key... so we are sure that we are not seeing cached problems... as you can read, it says cache up-to-date in his stderr.txt file

I have had problems where i only removed the OXP´, but the cache didnt update, so i´m fairly used to hold down shift key each time i start up oolite...

at least that would remove that possible scenario of an unupdated cache..

Also i can read tinker uses 1.71.2, i wonder if he updated to 1.71.2 reasently.

Did he install ontop of another install ?... without uninstalling the old version first ?

I seem to recall someone else did that by accident, and reported that his missiles suddenly sometimes where krait racers, because of install ontop of another...

EDIT, this was posted before i ahd read the two above posts
