So I found this "unusual cargo pod"...

...which turned out to be a cloaking device. But how do I use it? Can I turn it on and off, or am I always cloaked?

Press "0" (zero) to turn the cloak on and off. If you turn it on and choose the rear view from your ship you'll see your exhaust flame flickering as the cloak seems to work intermittently...

A lot of ships also have an external view defined. That is activated by pressing v. I this view mode you even can see the effects better.

Sorry for the dumb question, but that's because, as you can guess from my name, English is not my mothertongue....

What is the cloaking device? What is't for?

Thanks for your explanation with simple basic terms...

When cloaked you are invisible to other ships. So putting up the cloak will stop other ships attacking you and will also cause missiles to lose their lock on you. They can't see so can't attack you. It drains the energy banks though so you can't stay cloaked very long. Any kills you make cloaked also don't count. Handy if you're attacked by a lot of ships and need to escape. You can cloak and limp away. Basically it makes you invisible.

I mostly use the cloak in two ways.

- As an alternate ECM, to shake off ECM resistant missiles, ie hardheads, nukes, cascade torpedoes and the like. The cloak makes them lose lock and go pop.

- For when the lasers are starting to melt a hole in the hull and the shields have taken a battering. I hit the cloak and give myself a chance to charge the shields and cool my guns.

It's also useful in ambush attacks. Cloak up, get a weapons lock, burn in on injectors, then decloak and hit that sucker at point-blank before he knows what nailed him. Or, decloak in the middle of a pack and let loose an e-bomb or q-bomb blast. Surprise! (Yes, I know, I'm an evil bastard. :D )

Thanks very much for the explanation... wich has two answers in one. Now I know what to do with ECM hardned missile... since now the only solution I had was to inject witchspace fuel and escape as far as I could.

Good, good...

Cmdr Wyvern, you might be an evil bastard, but I like your style... ;)

The only problem I've had with the cloak is accidentally hitting '9' instead of '0' and promptly turning myself into a fugitive for detonating every GalCop within a 25km range... :(

Hitting the E key repeatedly will eventually destroy most hard hats, but not always!
